The steering committee in charge is working on changing the two-year program into a three year program. “All of these students are so eager to challenge themselves. It’s encouraging!” said Brown. The IWIL program is very service oriented — each year the IWIL team picks a cause they would like to raise awareness about and this year, they are focusing on poverty here in Transylvania County, and plan to hold a fundraiser in the Spring. The IWIL women are also mentors to students at Brevard Middle School and to each other The first year members are mentors to girls at BMS, returning IWIL members are mentors to the first years and then women selected from the community are mentors to the returning members. “This is a new style of leadership,” says Brown, “We are trying to break down the older hierarchal beliefs that say women can’t.” AH women interested are invited to apply-for more information, visit www.brevard.edu/iwil.
