Football falls to Carson-Newman in SAC opener
The Tornados hit the 300 yard mark rushing,
led by Kelvin Jeter’s 147 yards and one
touchdown. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough
to overcome Doug Belk’s three rushing scores
and Brandon Baker’s additional two as Brevard
fell to the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles on
Saturday afternoon, 35-17.
Jeter eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the
fourth time this season in carrying the ball 13
times for a game high 147 yards,
including a 59-yard dash for a
score to lead Brevard (3-2, 0-1
SAC) on the afternoon. Michael
Crumbaker added 92 yards on
20 carries, while Thadus Benton
III had 68 yards on 18 carries as
Brevard’s NCAA-leading rushing
attack racked up 332 yards on the
ground. Crumbaker struggled to get
the BC passing game in motion on
the afternoon, going zero for four,
with one interception and getting
sacked once.
Defensively, Trey Jenkins led
Brevard, as the freshman recorded
11 total tackles on the afternoon and led all
players with 1.5 tackles for loss. Michael Gist
added seven stops and a pass breakup on the
defensive side, while Christian Lumbu and
Stephan Hicks both recorded quarterback
hurries.
Senior quarterback for Carson Newman, Doug
BeUc directed the Eagles (3-2,1 -0 SAC) offense
on the afternoon to 389 total yards, with 313
coming on the ground. Belk carried the ball 13
times for 118 yards and three scores and was
five of nine through the air for 76 yards, with
his favorite target being Marcus Huie, who
caught three passes for 76 yards. Baker added
a team-high 142 yards on 18 carries to go with
two touchdowns, while Nate Inman added 48
yards on the ground.
Nathan Jones led the Eagles defense on the
afternoon, recording seven tackles, while forcing
and recovering a fumble, and recording the lone
interception in the game. Jarrell Emanuel and
Zeke Andrews both recorded a team-high 10
tackles, while Matt Nichols recorded a sack
against BC.
The Tornados got on the board first, after
forcing the Eagles into a three-and-out on their
opening possession. Brevard started on their own
16 and ran the ball 13 straight plays, marching
down the field behind Jeter’s 55 yards on five
carries and Benton’s 29 yards on five carries,
getting inside Carson-Newman’s 10 yard line.
The Eagles defense stiffened up, forcing a field
goal attempt, and Chase Henry placed the kick
rushes the ball during Saturday’s game
through the uprights from 22 yards out, giving
the Tornados the 3-0 lead with 6:44 remaining
in the opening quarter
A long kickoff return by Tyron Douglas set
up Carson-Newman on their next possession,
giving the Eagles the ball on their 41 yard line.
Back-to-back 20-plus yard carries by Belk and
Baker moved the ball inside the BC 10 yard line
and two plays later Baker plunged in from seven
yards out to put the Eagles on top, 7-3.
The teams would swap possession as Brevard
gave the ball back to the Eagles on downs, but
Carson-Newman punted it right back to the
Tornados, before Crumbaker was intercepted
on a third-down play by Jones at the Carson-
Newman 25 yard line.
Brevard stopped the Eagles on first and
second down, but Belk was able to find Huie
for a 50-yard reception moving the ball to the
BC 23 yard line on third-and-long and Carson-
Newman scored six plays later as Belk carried
it into the end zone to put the score at 14-3 with
4:43 remaining in the half
The Tornados were faced with a third-and-
long situation on their next possession and
Brevard was stopped as Crumbaker was tackled
short of the first down by Mario Russell and Jon
Gibson-Green. Electing to go for it on fourth
down, Jeter took the pitch from Crumbaker
around the right end and weaved his way
through defenders, stopping when he crossed the
goal line for a 59-yard touchdown run. Henry’s
extra point put the score at 14-10 with 2:14 left
on the clock.
Carson-Newman would answer
less than a minute later as Belk
found a seam in the Tornados
defense, scrambling for 49 yards
before getting shoved out-of-
bounds at the Brevard two-yard
line on a touchdown saving dive
by Salonik Amos. Baker would
take the ball over the guard on
the next play, putting the score
at 21 -10 as the teams headed into
the locker room.
The Tornados scored first in the
third quarter, taking possession
on their 35 yard line following
a Chris Jones’ punt with 6:31 remaining in the
quarter Crumbaker took the opening snap for
a 20-yard gain and later in the drive Jeter had
a 21-yard scamper around the left end as the
Tornados marched down the field on 10 plays.
Derek Church capped off the drive, taking the
pitch from Crumbaker around the right tackle
and scoring from one yard out to cut the lead to
21-17 with 41 seconds remaining in the third
quarter
Carson-Newman would close out the game
in the fourth as Belk carried the ball in from 10
yards out and scored later in the quarter on a
quarterback keeper up the middle withjust 3:57
remaining, as the Eagles closed out the SAC
opener for both teams, 35-17.
Brevard opens up their South Atlantic
Conference road schedule next weekend as
they travel to Salisbury to take on the Catawba
College Indians.
Catawba was the victor in their SAC opener
this past weekend, defeating the Wingate
Bulldogs, 35-28. Kickoff between the Tornados
and the Indians is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
