Oct. 15,2010 I The Clarion Campus News Page 3 BCE explores drug use, jazz legends By Sarah Bowers Staff Writer BCE 111: Addicted to Jazz, taught by Assistant Director of Music, Steve Wilson explores the history of jazz and drug use by some of the most famous jazz musicians from back in the day, such as Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. “This class gives music majors the history behind jazz,” says Wilson, “and it gives people who don’t like Jazz at least an appreciation for it!” The class also debates whether or not the drug use by those famous jazz greats contributed to their creative process. “I’m a music major, so this class helps me understand how and where these artists are coming from.” says Olivia Willie, a student in the class. “Jazz is a lot looser than other music styles.” “1 would have to say that my favorite part is how laid back the class is.” Willie comments. “The discussions are free form, and it allows for an easy flow of all kinds of ideas. Like free form jazz!” she laughs. Jazz is a completely American sty le of music- it was created here and is thought to have originated in New Orleans. The history of Jazz is uncertain, because the first original recordings of jazz weren’t made until 1917 in Chicago. “1 like getting to know students 1 otherwise would never get to see-because they aren’t music majors,” says Wilson. “Face it, if you aren’t a music major, you never take a step in this building!” he smiles. “1 have spoken with some previous students from the class, and they say they have grown an appreciation for Jazz music.” says Wilson. “Hopefully that appreciation will spread to art and other disciplines. It’s a new way of thinking.” What’s Happening at BC Fall Break: Saturday, Oct. 16 - Tuesday, Oct. 19.
