Page 4 Sports The Clarion \ Oct. 29, 2010 Men's soccer wins second straight game The men’s soccer team won their second straight game at home on Monday night. The Tornados were able to defeat the Queen’s University-Charlotte Royals by a score of 1-0. The win takes the Brevard to 3-12-1 overall on the season after defeating the non-conference foe. The only goal in the match came within the first four minutes of play. Sean Allison took a pass from Scott Schuurman and kicked the ball in mid-air, beating the keeper by placing the ball into the right side of the net. It was Allison’s first goal of the season and Schuurman added his second assist of the year Brevard took the 1-0 lead and never looked back as they shut out the Royals. Brevard outshot Queen’s 10-9 in the first half and played great defense in the second half as they held the Royals to eight shots, without allowing a goal. Pauli Jussila played he entire game in net for Brevard picking up his first win of the season and making five saves for Brevard. Women's soccer plays tougli fouglit loss to Newberry The Brevard College women’s soccer team was unable to defeat their South Atlantic Conference adversary on Saturday as they fell 1 -0 to Newberry. With the loss the Tornados fell to 3-12-1 and 1-7-0 in SAC play this season. In the first half, Brevard was outshot 9-3 without being able to get any great offensive opportunities. The Wolves took four comers in the first half, but neither team was able to find the net as the match was tied at zero heading into half It wasn’t until the 66th minute that the tie was broken by Newberry. Amberly Fowler took a shot from 20 yards out that was just out of reach of BC goal keeper Crissy Moran. Fowler took a pass from Lora Moore to set-up the only goal of the match. Moran played all 90 minutes in goal for Brevard. She was able to make seven saves after being shot-on 19 times in the game. Volleyball wins one, loses one in tournament The Brevard College volleyball team snapped a 19 match losing streak on Saturday afternoon, defeating the North Greenville Crusaders in the first match of the Columbia Tri-Match, 21-25, 25-23,25-23,25-23. Jamie Atkinson led the way for Brevard in the match, recording 14 kills and five blocks in the match, while Erin Rollins added eight kills and four blocks in the victory. Bethany Stevenson set up the Brevard attack in the match, leading the way with 31 set assists, while Rebecca Schoonover, Kortney Conner and Stevenson combined for 10 service aces in the match. Schoonover led the Tornados backline with a match-high 19 digs, while Sydney Yeomans had 13 digs. Jordei Osby led the Tornados at the net with eight blocks as the Tornados stopped 13 Crusaders attacks at the net. The Tornados fell in the nightcap against host Columbia, 16-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22, despite 10 kills by Ashlie Morrison, as Brevard fell to 3-20 on the season. Conner added eight kills and Erin Cox had five as the Tornados hit 18.5 percent from the field in the match. Stevenson again set up the attack with 27 set assists, while Atkinson, Stevenson and Conner all had two service aces apiece. Defensively, Yeomans led four Tornados in double-figures in digs with 15 in the match, while Lindsey Rogers and Conner both had 13 and Schoonover finished with 10. Brevard continued their dominance at the net, recording 11 blocks in the net as a team, with Osby leading the way with six total blocks in the four set match. The Tornados continued tournament play against Southern Wesleyan. Jamie Atkinson and Ashlie Morrison had nine kills apiece, while Jordei Osby added four kills and three blocks, but Amber Garrett led Southern Wesleyan with 14 kills as the Warriors defeated the Tornados on Wednesday evening. The Tornados hit 10.0 percent on the evening. Bethany Stevenson contributed 21 set assists in the match, while Lindsey Rogers, Atkinson Nikki Peacock arid Katie Donohue were recognized for Senior Day, Saturday at the match against Newberry I Jamie Atkinson had 14 kills and five blocks in the win Saturday and Rebecca Schoonover each had a service ace. Defensively, Schoonover led the Tornados with 12 digs. Southern Wesleyan (15-7) was led by Garrett as the Warriors hit 22.5 percent from the field in the match. Tierza Rangel added eight kills and Kayla Propes had seven to pace the SWU attack, while Cassie Gravely andEmiliy Cothran combined for 35 set assists. Defensively, Keni Abercrombie led the team with a match-high 18 digs, while Garrett was the team leader at the net with two total blocks.
