Nov. 5, 2010 I The Clarion Sports Page 5 BC fights Tenn. valiantly SaS*'* Drew Schauss scored the first points for Brevard, but the Tornados fell in their final action of the 2010-2011 preseason to the Tennessee Volunteers, 91-42. Josh Roper led Brevard with 15 points on the evening, while Jermichael Tanner added seven points, including a three-pointer from the left comer Josh Jordan led Brevard in the middle with 12 rebounds, six offensive and six defensive, while Roper and Schauss each had two assists. The game was scoreless throughout the first minute before Schauss put the Tornados in the lead with the first points of the game, connecting on a jumper in the short right comer to give BC the 2-0 lead. Tennessee responded as Goins stripped Tanner and put in the dunk to tie the game up at the 18 minute mark and then Tobias Harris connected on a jumper and completed the old-fashioned three-point play with a free throw, giving Tennessee their first lead of the contest. Roper connected on a three-point attempt from the top of the key to tie the ball game up, but Tennessee came back, scoring the next six points, going up 11-5 on a dunk by Williams. Tennesee continued their mn, going up 18-7 on a layup by Goins as the Volunteers defense forced nine BC tumovers in the first half to build a 26-11 lead. Tanner snapped a 3:08 scoreless streak for Brevard with a floater in the lane, while Roper and Schauss converted free throws to bring the score back to 37-16 with 2:05 to play in the half The Volunteers closed out the half with a 6-0 mn capped by a layup by Harris and Roper missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as the teams headed into the locker rooms with the Volunteers up 43-16. In the second half, the Volunteers outscored the Tomados 48-26 to claim the 91-42 victory. Roper led the Tomados with seven points in the second half, including the final points of the game on a breakaway layup to close out the game. This concludes the BC preseason, as the Tomados open up the 2010-2011 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 20 in Charlotte as they travel to Time Wamer Cable Arena to take on the Belmont Abbey Cmsaders. Tipoff for the game is set for 2 p.m. Jim Jones, of Atlanta, Georgia has been announced as the winner of the first ever Brevard College Sports Fantasy Auction. Jones’ final bid came in at $1,630. With this bid, Jones joined Brevard College men’s basketball head coach, Mike Jones, as an honorary assistant coach for the BC exhibition game at the University of Tennessee. He accompanied the team and coaches in the locker room, on the bench and in the huddle Wednesday night at Thompson Boling Arena. He also helped with reviewing the scouting report, languishing and cheering with Coach Jones and the BC Tomados. The entire Brevard College Athletic Staff thanks Mr. Jim Jones for his generous support of the Brevard College basketball program and for participating in the first ever BC Sports Fantasy Auction. All proceeds of the final bid will be used for the Championship Ring Fund which will outfit our 2010 South Atlantic Conference Toumament Champion Tomados with SAC Championship rings. Men's soccer earns postseason berth The Brevard College men’s soccer team has eamed a historic berth in program history, making it to the NCAA postseason by achieving a berth in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer toumament. The Tomados achieved their position in the toumament by virtue of a pair of victories on the BC SoccerField on Sept. 28 against conference opponent Tusculum College and on Oct. 23 against Newberry College. Andrew Gallowitch finished the regular season as the Brevard leader with four goals on the season, while Jaime Villacis, Jami Uuttu and Sean Allison all had two goals on the year. Villacis is probably the most versatile offensive threat on the Brevard team as the freshman added six assists to his totals on the year to lead Brevard with 10 total points on the season and led the team with 45 shots on the year. In goal. Jack Shaw and Pauli Jussila recorded all but one of the starts in goal on the season and had all three victories for the Tomados on the season and will be expected to patrol the net again during the Brevard playoff run. Their opponent for the first round will be tough, as they draw the number one seed in the toumament, Wingate University. Kickoff for the quarterfinal match between the Tomados and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in at Wingate University. Quarterfinal winners advance to the toumament semifinals, which will be held at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, Nov. 5. The two men’s semifinals will be played at 6 p.m. The men’s toumament championship will be Sunday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex. The championship match will be streamed live over the Intemet. Admission to all Food Lion South Atlantic Conference toumament events is $5 for adults and $2 for college students and children 13 and under Fans showing their Food Lion MVP card can save $1 off the adult admission price. Also, the South Atlantic Conference is collecting new, unused soccer balls, footballs or basketballs during the semifinals and championships in conjunction with WRHI’s Toys for Happiness campaign for Christmas gifts for underprivileged children. Fans donating a ball will receive two complimentary admissions.
