Page 2 Campus News The Clarion \ Nov. 12,2010 Cheerleading welcomes new coach, new expectations By Krisma Sellers Staff Writer This year, Brevard College welcomed a new face to the cheerleading program—coach Reva Shane Jarrett. Jarrett came to the Brevard College cheerleading squad with a great deal of experience and ready to make improvements. While attending Appalachian State University, Jarrett was a three-time Collegiate All-American Cheerleader Additionally, she is currently working with Rockstar Cheer, a competitive all-star cheerleading gym in Asheville and Coach Jarrett has also worked with other club cheerleading teams like Xcite Cheerleading and Club Cheer & Dance. Her high level of experience allows Jarrett to choreograph routines on the spot, which allows the squad to quickly put new routines together In the future, Jarrett wants to take the squad to an exhibition to perform just to see how the team would manage cheering at a competitive level. Jarrett makes her goals for the program very apparent, saying, “My intentions for these girls are to prove to me and their school they want to be looked upon as athletes. They will determine discipline and discover responsibilities. They will become stronger, be on top of things and taking this very seriously. These girls deserve someone that cares enough to make them better I want people to see a difference in the squad.” To bring about the improvements, Jarrett has the squad getting up at 6 a.m. for practice two to three times a week. On days the squad doesn’t have team practice, they work out individually. In practice, the squad has learned and improved cheers from previous years, learned several stunts, put together a dance for the fight song and learned how to perform more uniformly. Squad captain Mary Beth Criser has noticed the teams’ improvements from their new coach. “I think she is what the college has been looking for in a cheerleading coach,” Criser said. “She is dedicated and determined to make the cheerleading program reach its fullest potential.” “I think she is very motivated and her love for the sport has rubbed off on me to do well, because she knows exactly what she wants and when she wants it and she always expects 100 percent and it’s easy to give it when you know she is also giving 100 percent to the squad,” said freshman Alexis Brigman. It appears that the squad is ready and willing to step up to the challenges Jarrett presents them and the future certainly looks bright for both the program and Jarrett. Coach Reva Shane Jarret was a three-time Collegiate All-American at Appalachian State.
