Page 4 Sports The Clarion \ Nov. 12,2010 Men's soccer falls in double-overtime match at SAC Tournament The Brevard College men’s soccer team was able to comeback from a 2-0 first half deficit and tie things up 2-2 with Wingate University, but came up short as the Tornados fell 3-2 in a double-overtime loss in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal on Wednesday night. Brevard took Wingate to the final 30 seconds of the second overtime. Freshman Jami Uuttu put the Tornados on the scoreboard at the 69 minute mark with an assist from Jaime Villacis in a hard fought loss to Wingate at the SAC Tournament. Volleyball falls in final match of the season Rebecca Schoonover capped off a stellar career with the Brevard College Tornados with 15 digs and Kortney Conner added 11 kills, but BC was unable to overcome visiting King College as the Tornados fell to the Tornado in straight sets. The Tornados finish up the regular season with a record of 3-26. Jamie Atkinson and Ashlie Morrison each had seven kills in the defeat, while Bethany Stevenson led the team with 24 set assists. Sydney Yeomans added three service aces, while contributing 10 digs on the backline, while Atkinson led all players with four blocks in the match. Schoonover finishes her career with Brevard with 1,591 digs, overtaking Maegan Bodiford in the final match of the season to finish second in digs in the BC all-time record book. She finished her career with two matches in which she eclipsed 30 digs in a match, including last year on November 6th against Mars Hill, where she recorded 37 in the Tornados victory over the Lions. A two-time BC Volleyball captain, Schoonover was an Honorable Mention recipient for the prestigious 2009 Wooden Cup and plans to graduate in the spring with a degree in Business and Organizational Leadership. Wingate came out of the gate shooting as they had 16 first half shots but were unable to find the net until the 15 minute mark. Jamie McKenna scored his 13 th goal of the season when he took a cross from Fabricio Barancoski and put it away with his left foot. McKenna’s goal gave Wingate a 1-0 lead. The Tornados were able to hold the Bulldogs at bay for almost 20 minutes until Wingate was able to find the net again. Paulo Brunetto scored his second goal of the season when he took a loose ball in the box and put a low liner into the net, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into the half The Tornados rallied in the second half by scoring two goals on just two shots. In a two minute timeframe Brevard was able to find the net twice. First when Jami Uuttu took a comer kick from Jaime Villacis and used one touch to beat the Wingate keeper It was Uuttu’s third goal of the season and Villacis’ seventh assist of the season to slim Wingate’s lead to 2-1. Just two minutes later Landon Reid was able to beat the Bulldog’s keeper for his second goal of the season to nod things up at 2-2 which is where the score stayed through the remainder of regulation time. The Tornados held Wingate to just three shots in the over time periods and didn’t allow the final Bulldog goal until just 30 seconds left in the second overtime. Barancoski used his noggin to knock one into the net on a free kick from Luke Mulholland for his eighth goal of the season. The goal gave Wingate the final 3-2 victory which eliminated Brevard from the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament. Jack Shaw started the match for Brevard and was pulled after 45 minutes of play. Shaw allowed two goals on 16 shots by Wingate. Pauli Jussila closed out the game for the Tornados. Jussila was tested by nine shots and held the Bulldogs at-bay until the final 30 seconds of the second overtime. With the loss, Brevard fell to 3-15-1 as their final record for the 2010 season. The Tornados ended their season out winning two of their final four matches and look to build on their late season success next season. Canale earns fifth place finish at SAC Cross Country Championships Angela Canale became the secondBC women's cross country runner in Brevard's recent history in the NCAA Division II to place in the top seven at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championships, finishing fifth overall, in receiving First Team All-SAC and All-SAC Freshman team honors this morning in Wingate, N.C. Both the BC men's and the women's cross country teams took the field at the meet, competing against runners from all participating SAC institutions. The women finished eighth overall as a team, led by Canale as the freshman finished fifth place overall out of the 77-woman field, crossing the finish line in 19:31 in the 5,000-meter race. Olivia Fawcett was the next quickest to cross the finish line for Brevard. Fawcett crossed in a time of 22:23 which was good for 38th place. Danielle Messer finished with a time of 23:27, while Ariel Muiselaar crossed two seconds later at 23:29. Melissa Schmidt finished with a time of23:56 and Grace Skiles covered the course in 24:16. Liza Fortenberry was able to complete the race in 28:37. Anderson University’s Whitney Bishoff took the women’s race with a time of 18:10, while the Trojans took the event as a team as well. F or the men, Jonathon Lavelle was able to lead them to a seventh place finish. Lavelle finished in 31 st place with a time of27:46 in the 8,000-meter run. Jordan Tager and Michael Allsopp were the next two to cross the finish line for the Brevard men as they each crossed at 28:08. Erik Gibbs covered all 8,000 meters in 28:52, while Josh Mower finished at 29:23. Tiffen Tapia crossed the finish line 10 seconds after Mower at 29:33. Chris Shore was able to finish in 30 minutes even and Christopher Shelton covered the course in 30:51. Tusculum’s Simon Holzapfel took the race with a time of 25:04 while Mars Hill was able to take the team title finishing three of the top four racers. Freshman Angela Canale became the second woman in the cross-country programs recent history to achieve a top seven finish in the NCAA Division II SAC Championships.
