Nov. 19, 2010 I The Clarion News Page 3 Spiers Art Gallery hosts senior exhibition By Danielle Burch Staff Writer For two Brevard College Art students, the journey to graduation is almost over On Friday, Nov. 12, Spiers Art Gallery in Sims Art Building hosted the works of Beth Higgins and Anne Bolos. “An art student’s senior exhibit is the highlight of their college career,” says junior photography major Katherine McKittrick. For about four years, art students take a variety of classes in preparation for their senior show. These classes range from two-dimensional design to ceramics, photography, painting and computer graphics. As the student reaches the end of his or her college experience, he or she meets with the Art Department faculty to begin to plan a senior show. The senior show is a compilation of themed artwork based on what the student has learned in their time at Brevard. At the end of a grueling semester of planning, working, critiquing, reworking, publicizing and preparing, an art student is ready to present his or her work to the student body and community. This fall’s show consists of acrylic portraits BINGO: Friday, Nov. 19 at 9 p.m. in Jones Hall Lobby. Free cupcakes and prizes. Q: How did you come up with the theme for the senior show? Higgins: I had worked some with assemblage, essentially 3-Dimensional mixed media, last semester and I really enjoyed it. At the beginning of this semester, Jo Pumphrey told me I was strong in that area, and that I should pursue it for my senior show, so I did. Bolos: It was an easy decision to select the students of Brevard College. Each of my fellow students has helped shape my wonderful experience while at BC. Q: What was the hardest part about the senior show semester? About actually creating the pieces? Higgins: I would have to say the hardest part was coming in on weekends when I could have been spending time with my son. With the pieces, there were times when I just had to leave a piece alone, not working on it at all for a few days or even a few weeks before coming to a conclusion of what should be attached to the piece. Student Government Association: Every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Reserve Dining Room. This week is an open forum. Everyone is welcome. BC Greens: Meets Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in MG 113. Q: What was your favorite part about the senior show semester and creating the pieces? Higgins: I think my favorite part was the actual creating of the pieces. When a piece came together, the thrill of having created it was awesome. I loved working on a piece in one direction and having the idea change while I was working on it. Each piece spoke to me, and some would change what they were saying mid-sentence. Bolos: The night of the show and seeing people’s reactions to all the artwork in the show! Q: Would you do anything differently if you were to do another senior show? Higgins: I’m not sure there would be anything I could do differently. Maybe not stress about it so much, just enjoy it completely. Bolos: Yes, I would choose to make different frames. The shadow box frames were more challenging to make than I expected. Q: Do you have a favorite piece? Higgins: Yes, my favorite piece is “Self Portraif ’ for the sheer fact that I feel so a part of that piece. It is me, it is my life experiences. Bolos: It’s hard to choose just one since I have a favorite aspect in each portrait I did for the senior show. Q: What artists influenced you? What experiences influenced you? Higgins: The artist that influenced me the most is Robert Rauschenberg. If Bill Byers had not introduced me to his work, I would not have formed a fascination with it, I would not have gone in the direction I went in. Everything in my life has been an influence on this work, the things that happened to me as a child, the experience of motherhood, just everything. Bolos: In all reality, all artists influenced me including my fellow artists in the painting room. Q: What is one word of advice you would give to fellow students; art majors or not? Higgins: Never give up, never quit; always persevere. The thing you work hardest for will be what you enjoy and remember the most. Bolos: Perseverance. Just keep going and take it one day at a time. Q: Is there anything else you would like to say? Any pieces you’d like to point out or explain more? Anyone you want thanked in the Clarion? Higgins: Thank you Jo, Bill, Kyle, Anne, and Diane for the critiques that were so helpful and insightful. Without these critiques, my work would not have made it this far What’s Happening at BC
