Nov. 19, 2010 I The Clarion Sports Page 5 Women's basketball 2010-11 season openers Lady Tornados fall to North Georgia in Southeast Regional Challenge The Brevard College women’s basketball team fell 61-58 in their season opener to the North Georgia Saints as they compete in the Chick-Fil-A Southeast Regional Challege being hosted by Clayton State. The Tornados were able to jump out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to two baskets from Candice Fritz and a three-pointer hit Amber Roberts. The Saints scored four unanswered points and were able to climb back 8-7 at the ten minute marker Brevard continued to hold on to the lead through much of the first half as they led by as many as six points during with 6:48 left in the first half of play. North Georgia was able to rally and take a one point lead as the game headed into half-time with a score of 25-24. Roberts led Brevard in the first half with six points after going. Fritz wasn’t far behind as she put in a pair of buckets plus a free-throw for five points. The Tornados were able to come out and take an early in the second half, as Amanda Whitaker hit a jumper within the first minute of play putting Brevard up 26-25. After exchanging baskets with the Tornados, the Saints went on a six point run taking a 36-30 lead with 15 minutes left to play. Brevard was able to make another run and take a 40-38 lead after Alyssa Cutshaw hit a three pointer at the 11:20 mark. Following Cutshaw’s three point basket, Brevard and North Georgia continued to trade-off scoring baskets with North Georgia taking the lead in many of the exchanges. Holli Flippo nailed a three-point basket with just under two minutes remaining in the game giving the Tornados a 58-57 lead. However, it was also Brevard’s final field goal of the game as the Saints were able to convert three of four free throw attempts in the final minutes to give them the 61-58 edge for the win. Janyce Ealey of North Georgia led all scorers with 12 points in the win over the Tornados. For Brevard, Fritz and Lindsay Brendle led the way offensively scoring 10 points a piece. Brendle was able to hit six of eight from the free throw line while Fritz shot 60% from the field. Women’s basketball loses to nationally ranked Clayton State Lakers The women’s basketball team took the floor with the nationally ranked Clayton State Lakers on Saturday evening as they fell 80-66. Despite having four players score in double-figures the Tornados were unable to keep the Lakers at-bay, as they shot 44.8% from the field on Saturday evening. Brevard falls to 0-2 on the season after the loss. BC was able to shoot 50% from the field but was unable to top the Lakers in Morrow, Ga. Holli Flippo led the way for Brevard with 14 points as she went 6-for-13 from the field. Candice Fritz and Lindsay Brendle continued to display an offensive presence by scoring 12 and 11 points respectively on the night. Micheala Watkins was also able to put up double-digit points off the bench on Saturday. The Tornados were able to stick with Clayton State early in the first half by taking an 8-4 lead in the first four minutes of play. However, the Lakers would take over going on a 16-0 run in the following six minutes of play. With 9:19 remaining Clayton State was leading Brevard 25-10. The Tornados fell behind as many as 20 in the first half, but were able to climb within 16 as they head into half-time. The Tornados came out flying in the second half and outscored the Lakers 14-4 in the first five minutes of play in the half Brevard was able to come within four points when Micheala Watkins drove and hit a layup at the 11:13 mark making the score 56-52 in favor of Clayton State. The Lakers hit a free throw to take a five point lead, but Flippo was able to retum-fire with a layup of her own brining the Tornados within three points. Tanisha Woodard of Clayton State hit a three- pointer next time down to floor to give the Lakers a six point lead, but Flippo was undeterred as she came down the next possession and hit a three of her own bringing Brevard back within three. The Tornados were able to claw within two at 8:37 when Fritz hit a jumper to make it 61- 59, but were unable to hold back the offensive firepower of Clayton State as they outscored Brevard 17-5 in the seven minutes of play bringing the final tally 80-66 in favor of the Lakers. Women’s basketball goes 0-3 on season after loss to Pfeiffer Falcons The Brevard College women’s basketball team was upended in their third game of the season as they fell on the road 65-56 in Memer Gymnasium at Pfeiffer University on Tuesday evening. Candice Fritz led the Tornados recording the first double-double of her career as the Tornados fell to 0-3 on the season. Brevard took an early 3-0 lead when Lindsay Brendle hit a three point basket in the first minute of play. Amanda Whitaker hit a layup in Brevard’s next trip down the floor, making it 5-3 in favor of BC. The two-point lead was the final lead of the game for Brevard as the Falcons went on an 18-2 run making it 21-7 in favor of Pfeiffer after seven minutes of play. Following the 18-2 run Brevard was able to keep pace with Pfeiffer as they traded baskets up and down the floor with the Falcons and went into half-time trailing 38-24. The Tornados came out swinging in the second half and were able to fight back and bring their deficit within six points with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Brevard was able to trade-off a pair of baskets with the Falcons, but Pfeiffer was able to come out on top 65-56 in the end. Fritz led the Tornados with her double-double as she scored 13 points and was able to pull down 12 boards for BC. Fritz is leading the Tornados in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game. Micheala Watkins led the Tornados in points with 14 off of the bench. Watkins was 7-for-lO from the field. Pfeiffer’s Dominique China led all scorers with 22 points in the Falcons win over Brevard. Brevard continues their tough pre-conference road schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Laurinburg, NC to take on St. Andrews.
