Page 4 Sports The Clarion \ Dec. 3,2010 Men's B-ball earns first win over Lees-McRae Four Tornados scored in double figures and Brevard was able to hold off a late Lees-McRae rally as Vincent Dombrowski and Jermichael Tanner hit key free throws down the stretch as the Tornados recorded their first victory of the 2010-2011 season, 76-68. Gaither Hendrix led all players with 17 points as the Tornados (1-2) converted 41.3 percent of their field goals in the game. Josh Roper added 16 points, six rebounds and four steals for Brevard, while Josh Jordan led the way down low with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Dombrowski added 10 points, hitting two three-pointers and went a perfect four for four at the free throw line as Brevard leaves Williams Gymnasium with their first win of the season. The Tornados scored the first six points of the contest on their way to opening the game with a 13-1 run as Hendrix put in five early points for the Tornados. Lees-McRae battled back with a 10-0 run of their own to cut the lead back to within two at the 11:17 mark as Gerry Hairston drilled a jumper to put the score at 13-11. This was the closest the Bobcats would close the gap BC cross country competes in Soutlieastern ciiampionsiiip The BC cross country teams competed in the Southeast Region Cross Country Championship race held by Queen’s University at McAlpine Park in Charlotte on Saturday. Angela Canale led Tornados by placing in the top 20 in the regional championship race. Jonathon Lavelle led the Tornados with a 93rd place finish in the 164-man race. Lavelle was able to cover the 10,000-meter race with a time of 35:50. Jordan Tager was next to finish for the Brevard men with a 107th place finish after coming across the finish line in 36:19. As, a team the Tornados placed 22nd in a 25 team field. The host Royals of Queen’s were able to take the team title while Columbus State’s Meshack Koyiaki took the individual title with a 29:45 finish. Angela Canale led the Tornados’ women’s team with an 18th place finish in the regional championship. Canale finished up the 6,000- meter race with a 23:11 beating out 170 runners in the 188-woman field. Ariel Musielaar was the next to finish for Brevard coming in at 147th place. Olivia Fawcett finished up shortly after Musielaar as she placed 152nd. As a team the Tornados placed in 24 th in the 28-team race. Queen’s was able to take the team title while Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kate Greiwich took the individual title with a 20:55 time. The race at McAlpine park finishes up the season for the BC Cross Country team. The Tornados had one runner made the All-SAC team as Angela Canale was named first team after placing fifth in the Food Lion SAC Championship race on November 6th at Wingate. as the Tornados went up eight at 24-16 on a layup by Jordan off the assist from Tanner at the 6:39 mark. Jordan closed out the half with a free throw and a layup as Brevard went into the locker room with the 30-21 halftime lead. The Tornados lead extended out to as much as 26 points in the second half, going up 61-35 with 8:27 remaining following a Roper layup, but the Bobcats weren’t done, mounting one final rally, outscoring the Tornados 29-11 over the next eight minutes, cutting the lead back to within single digits at 72-64 with 35 seconds remaining in the contest, however free throws clinched the win for Brevard as Dombrowski went 4-4 in the last 29 seconds to put the game away as the Tornados escaped with the 76-68 victory. For the game, Brevard went 26 of 63 from the field, while out-rebounding their opponents for the third straight game, finishing with the 46-45 edge. The Tornados also had 11 steals in the contest. Lees-McRae shot 34.8 percent from the floor, but improved their mark to 48.5 percent (16-33) in the second half as they attempted to comeback. The Bobcats however were betrayed at the free throw line, converting 15 of 31 attempts for 48.4 percent in their second loss of the season. The Tornados finish up their season opening road trip this Saturday, December 4th, as they open South Atlantic Conference play by heading to Anderson, S. C. to take on Anderson University. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Trojans in Abney Athletic Center is set for 4 p.m. Tornados fall to Limestone, 76-78 Josh Roper scored 22 of his game high 32 points in the second half, including the Tornados first 17 points of the half in leading the comeback, but late free throws again took down the Tornados as Limestone went five of six from the charity stripe in the final 16 seconds of the game as Brevard fell in Timken Center, 76-78. Roper led Brevard (0-2) with 32 points, connecting on 13 of 25 from the floor, nine of 14 in the second half in his attempt to rally the Tornados from a four-point halftime deficit. Gaither Hendrix added 12 points and three assists, while Josh Jordan pulled down a team- high seven rebounds. Vincent Dombrowski continued the Tornados streak of hitting a three- pointer at the buzzer, connecting from just behind half court as time expired in the contest to round out the scoring leaders with seven points. Jarrell Douglass led three Saints (3-0) in double figures with 26 points and added nine rebounds in the contest. Stewart Clark and Joe Raga added 10 points apiece as the Saints connected on 43.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the game. Danny Friend also pulled down nine rebounds in the contest to lead the Saints on the boards. A three-pointer by Ashton Ford gave the Saints the 12-11 lead at the 16:01 mark in the first half, but coming out of the media timeout, the Tornados went on an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Roper to go up 19-12 with 13:13 to play in the opening period. The lead would expand to 23-14 following a jumper by Jackson, before the Saints went on a run of their own, cutting the lead back to 28-26, before a three-pointer by Kenny Fluellen completed the comeback as Limestone took a 29-28 lead with 7:09 in the half The teams would go back and forth the remainder of the opening half, until Douglas went on a personal 7-2 run against the Tornados to close out the half as the Saints held the 38-34 lead at the break. Roper reeled off the first six points of the half to give the Tornados the 40-38 lead, but Limestone took charge, going up 50-42 off a three-pointer by Bogdan at the 15:48 mark. Brevard steadily chipped away at the lead throughout the half, tying it up at 57, 59 and 61, before taking the lead for the first time in the second half at 70-69 off a layup by Drew Schauss with 3:00 to play. Douglass would give the lead back to the hosts for good with a pair of free throws with 2:45 to play. A desperation half-court shot bounced off the backboard and into the net at the buzzer for Dombrowski to finish the scoring in the contest as the Tornados fell to the Saints on Saturday afternoon, 78-76. For the contest, the Tornados were 31-69 (44.9%) from the floor, hitting 52.9 percent of their shots in the second half in the comeback. Brevard also held the rebounding edge over the Saints, pulling down 37 rebounds to Limestone’s 34, but the decisive edge in the contest came at the free throw line as the Saints went 23 of 29 from the charity stripe, while the Tornados were eight of 12.
