Dec. 3, 2010 | The Clarion Sports Page 5 Tornados Sports Briefs: Women's basketball Lady Tornados defeat Lees-McRae Bobcats, 71-56 The Brevard College women’s basketball team was able to pick up their third win of the season when they rolled the Lees-McRae Bobcats 71-56 on Saturday afternoon in the Comfort Suites Classic. The Tornados had three players in double-figures as led throughout the majority of the contest at Goodman Gymnasium on the campus of Catawba College. The Tornados improved their record to 3-4 overall with the win. Brevard fell behind by as many as seven points in the first eight minutes of play as they tried to go stride for stride with the Bobcats, but Lees-McRae took a 14-7 lead with 11:51 remaining in the first half The Tornados were able to rebound with a 13-point run giving them a six point, 20-14 lead over the Bobcats with just over five minutes remaining in the first half of play. Lees-McRae was able to tie things up with just over two minutes left in the half, but the Tornados were able to take the game into the half with a three point advantage. Micheala Watkins and Anna Schlobohm led Brevard in the first half of play with eight points each. Lindsay Brendle and Brianna Worley were each able to contribute five in the first 20 minutes of play. Brevard came out flying in the second half of play to jump out to a nine point lead with 16:49 remaining when Watkins hit a pair of free throws, giving the Tornados a 36-27 lead. Brevard continued to build on their lead and took a commanding 19 point lead following a pair of free throws by Candice Fritz with just 9:40 left in the game. Brevard was able to gain a 21 point advantage with 6:37 left on the clock. Watkins was able to sink another pair of free ones to give BC a 60-39 advantage. The Tornados were able to hold out a double digit lead throughout the final minutes of play. Chezney McJunkin and Micah LaJoie each hit their first buckets of the 2010-11 season. Each of the guards hit a three-point bucket in the final six minutes of play contributing to the 71-56 final in favor of the Tornados. Women's basketball picks up fourth win vs. UNC-A The Brevard College Tornados women’s basketball team evened up their record at 4-4 by defeating the Division 1 UNC-Asheville Bulldogs on Monday night at the Justice Center in Asheville, N.C The Tornados had four players in double digits en route to their fourth win of the season. Brevard was able to jump out to an early lead but the Bulldogs and Tornados traded baskets up-and-down the floor for the first six minutes of play when former Bulldog, Brianna Worley hit a three-point bucket with 14:11 remaining in the first half of play. Worley’s three sparked the Brevard offense as they went on a 10 point run. BC led 23-13 with 9:37 to play in the opening half The Tornados continued to pressure the Bulldogs and build on their 10 point lead. Brevard led by as many as 13 when Lindsay Brendle put BC up 28-15 after hitting a jumper with 5:34 to play. UNC-Asheville was able to fight back, but Brevard took the Bulldogs into half-time with an 11 point lead at 34-23. Brendle led the Tornados in the first half with eight points. Anna Schlobohm and Worley each had six points in the first half Brevard shot 40.6% from the field in the first half, while the Bulldogs hit just 32.1% of their shots. The Tornados spread the ball around offensively as four Tornados ended with double digits. Schlobohm led Brevard with 13 points, while Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) added 12 of her own. Watkins also came up with a pair of steals, four assists and seven rebounds in the BC victory. Worley finished the game with 11 points, as she hit three from beyond the arc and was 4-for-lO from the field. Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Term.) was able to drop 10 on the Bulldogs and came up with a pair of steals and six rebounds in the win. Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) led the Tornados in rebounds with nine. Brevard was able to shoot 40.4% from the field in the win. The Tornados caused 22 Asheville turnovers and they were able to hold the Big South Conference’s leading scorer to just 13 points. Brevard was also able to limit their turnovers with just 18 in the game, compared to the 26 and 30 in the last two games. Wonnen's basketball falls In closely contested match The Brevard College women’s basketball team fell to the Erskine College Flying Fleet on Tuesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados fell 77-74 as they were outscored 39- 33 in the second half of the loss to Erskine. The Tornados were able to jump on top early as they went ahead by eight following a Holli Flippo three-point bucket with 14:47 remaining putting Brevard up 16-8. BC was able to remain on-top of the Flying Fleet throughout the entire first half leading by as many as nine points. Brevard was up 28-19 following a Flippo layup with 8:14 left in the first half The Fleet were able to outscore the Tornados through the rest of the first half by six points and went into half-time trailing Brevard by three at 41-38. Flippo and Lindsay Brendle each had 14 points in the first half to lead Brevard. Amanda Whitaker had a pair of blocks, a two steals and three assists in the first half Anna Schlobohm led Brevard with four rebounds in the first half The Tornados led the first seven minutes of play before Erskine was able to tie things up at the 12:28 mark, 49-49. Christine Phan hit a three-ball to give Erskine since the 17:09 mark in the first half The Flying Fleet was able to pull up by seven with 10:03 remaining in the game. The Tornados tried to fight back and tied things up 01:20 left in regulation. Erskine was able to pull up by four with just 34 seconds left in the game. Flippo came back down the floor and was able to hit a three-pointer bringing Brevard within one point. Erskine was able to hit a pair of free throws which put the Flying Fleet up by the final 77-74 mark. Flippo and Brendle led the Tornados with 19 and 18 points respectively. They also led Brevard with six and seven rebounds. Schlobohm and Candice Fritz each chipped in with eight points. Whitaker finished the game with three steals, a pair of blocks, and four assists. Brevard shot 51%) from the field going 26-for-51 and 50% from three-point land going 7-for-14. The Tornados hit the road tomorrow for their first SAC match-up when they take on Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.
