The Brevard College women’s basketball team opened up their South Atlantic Conference schedule with a road game at Anderson University. The Tornados fell to the Trojans by a score of63-52. With the loss the Tornados fall to 4-6 and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Trojans jumped out on-top after winning the opening tip, but the Tornados were able to fight and matchAnderson and trailed 10-9 at the 15:32 mark in the opening half After Amanda Parris hit a pair of free throws for the Trojans, Micheala Watkins came down to hit a three- point bucket to tie the game up at 12 a piece. Anderson retum-fired with five straight when Ashley Abed made a layup and a three-point bucket by Lauren Beeson. Brevard came back with five oftheir own when Amber Roberts hit a three-ball and Anna Schlobohm followed with a two-point jumper as the shot clock expired tying things up at 17-17 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half Alexa Neal was able to come back down the floor and hit her second three-ball of the game putting Anderson up 20-17 at the 11:48 mark. The Tornados continued to battle as Neal hit the first bucket after the break sparking offense from both sides. After Neal’s three-point bucket, the Tornados came back with a five spot after a Candice Fritz two-point jumper and a Holli Flippo three-ball. Heading into the final three minutes, Brevard trailed 31-29. The Trojans were able to go on a seven point run in the heading into the half as the Tornados trailed 38-29 at the break. After the first half Brevard was shooting 11- of-32, good for 34.4 percent from the field and 5-for-13 from three-point line, at 38.5 percent Micheala Watkins is led the Tornados with six points in the first half She also led Brevard with three rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play. Neal led the Trojans in the first half going 4-for-4 from behind the arc with 12 points. Maci Siniard was 3-for-4 from the field with seven points in the opening half The Trojans opened up the scoring after three minutes into the second half when Tilde Ahlin hit a layup, which sparked the Tornados to respond with a Flippo three-pointer, making it 40-32. The Trojans went on a 12-4 run making it 52-36 with 8:45 remaining in regulation. Women's basketball signs recruit The Brevard College athletic department and head coach Shannon Reid are pleased to announce that Mount Airy High School senior Taylor Hiatt signed her national letter of intent to play for the Tornados on Nov. 10,2010. Hiatt is from Mount Airy, North Carolina where she plays under the high school head coach Howard Mayo. The two-time All- Conference award winner is a 5’9 frontcourt player, who has played all three frontcourt positions for Mount Airy High School and will bring a versatile inside and outside threat to the Brevard offense. Hiatt is a two-time first-team All-Northwest Conference selection, with similar statistical averages of eight and a half points and six and a half rebounds for both her sophomore and junior seasons. She is also an 80 percent free throw shooter, and led the Mount Airy Lady Bears to a 27-3 record last year, all while advancing to the Elite Eight of the North Carolina high school playoffs. "We are very excited to have Taylor join our Brevard Family. She is a hard working athlete that brings an aggressive style of play to our system. Her ability to defend, rebound, and score from different positions will allow her to make an immediate impact in our program. I look forward to her future as a Tornado." Coach Reid. Hiatt not only excels on the court but takes pride in her responsibilities within the classroom, carrying an exceptional grand point average. She was being recruited by Pfeiffer University, Lees- McRae College, North Greenville University, and St. Bonaventure before deciding that Brevard was the choice for her The Trojans were able to keep control through the remainder of the second half as the Tornados were only able to come within 10 of the Anderson until the final buzzer when the scoreboard read 63-52 in favor of the Trojans. Holli Flippo led the Tornados offensively with 11 points in the loss. Amanda Whitaker led Brevard on the boards with six rebounds as the Tornados were outrebounded by 19, 45-26. Lindsay Brendle and Micheala Watkins each had eight points. Brevard shot just 30.5 percent from the field while Anderson was 47.5 percent from the field. The Tornados don’t have another game for 26 days when they travel to Greeneville, Tennessee to take on the preseason favorite to win the South Atlantic Conference, the Tusculum Pioneers. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in Greeneville. Baseball team helps spread holiday cheer The Brevard College Tornados baseball team volunteered with the Twilight tour in downtown Brevard on Saturday, December 4th for the sixth consecutive year, while the entire Brevard College Athletic Department took part in the annual Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade. The baseball team split up in three groups, filling up luminaries with sand and candles before lining the streets downtown. The groups also went around, making sure the candles stayed lit, as well as spending time interacting with the crowd, before coming back at the end of the evening to help with the cleanup. Head Baseball Coach Matt McCay had the following to say, "This was a great opportunity for Brevard College Baseball to get out in the community and help be a part of a great festival and a great organization. The Heart of Brevard and the Parks and Recreation Department do such a great job of making this festival and Twilight tour a great event." He also commented, "We are just very happy that our players got an opportunity to give back and help out in setting up the luminary candles.
