Aside from his impressive coaching resume.
Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara has been finding
very generous ways to give back to the Brevard
campus and its community.
Shinohara recently led the women's soccer
team to their first berth in post-season play,
reaching the quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion
South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer
tournament before bowing out to eventual
champion Carson-Newman.
This year, however. Coach Shinohara has taken
me in, a non-athlete who he had never met before
my request for a tutor, as a Japanese language
student. Being a Religious Studies major who
hope to pursue graduate work in Japanese
language this training is simply priceless. Coach
Shinohara has not only been kind, patient, and
thorough in lessons, he has not asked for any
compensation, monetary or otherwise.
For being an individual who goes above and
beyond for students for the pure sake of being
helpful, I thank Coach Shinohara for being a
BC Standout.

Tornados help out
with Special Olympics
The Brevard College men’s and women’s
basketball teams recently took time out of their
season to practice with the Transylvania County
Special Olympics basketball team at Brevard
Elementary School.
Brevard Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Michael Jones had the following to say, "It’s a
real honor for us to be involved with the Special
Olympics. It’s a great opportunity for our team
and something our guys really enjoy."
"Our student-athletes always enjoy the
opportunity to work with Special Olympics,"
said Women’s Basketball Coach Shannon Reid.
"It means so much to our players to share our
talents with their athletes."
The Transylvania County Special Olympics
team enters their final week of basketball practice
this week, before beginning the Track and Field
season in February.
Special Olympics Coach Dick Ream said, "The
experience the athletes had with the College
teams was very rewarding and the Special
Olympics athletes said they will be at the BC
basketball games to cheer the Tornados on."
