Jan. 28, 2011 | The Clarion Arts & Life Page 7 'Santorum' from page 6 constitutional rights; many immediately (ignoring the flawed logic) and unfairly considered Santorum a racist for these remarks. While his reasoning is not sound, Santorum seems to have meant no harm in his comments in regards to race which he only referenced to help “illuminate” people on an issue he is passionate about. The extent to which his passion controls him, however, is what should concern us. On Oct. 11, 1996 Santorum suffered the loss of a child by premature birth. His son, Gabriel Michael (named for the two famous archangels), lived two hours outside of the womb before passing away. This tragedy however is only worsened by the behavior with which Santorum dealt with his loss. Wanting his 6,4, and 1 year old children to “absorb and understand that they had a brother”, Santorum wrapped the dead fetus in a blanket as per the style of other living children, and took the late Gabriel to his wife’s parents home. There they took pictures, sang to the child, and even held a private Mass. This later became a campaign point. Santorum used his prematurely bom son’s death as a means of campaigning for pro-life legislation, backed by his wife, Karen Santorum, who writes in her book “Letters to Gabriel”, “When the partial-birth abortion vote comes to the floor of the U. S. Senate for the third time, your daddy needs to proclaim God's message for life with even more strength and devotion to the cause.” This is a prime example of religion justifying disturbing, if not unacceptable behavior The obvious counter is that every group has “crazies”, and to discount the whole for the bad apple is unfair Yet, religion is an interesting exception to this reasoning. These people would presumably be instable people regardless of their religion. God or not, crazy people are indeed crazy. The problem comes, then, when religion accepts and even embraces this sort of behavior Without religion and individual of Santorum’s make may be identified as abnormal, and given the appropriate assistance. With God, though, all things are possible.
