Page 4 The Clarion \ Feb. 4, 2011 January Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month Micheala Watkins and Gaither Hendrix of the Brevard College Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of January, as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department. Watkins was voted the Female Student- Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees and teammates Anna Schlobohm and Lindsay Brendle. Watkins led the Tornados women’s basketball team in the month of January, averaging 12.4 points per game, 3.0 assists per game and 2.9 steals per game as she sparked the Tornados to a pair of South Atlantic Conference victories at home in Boshamer Gymnasium against Carson- Newman and Anderson. Watkins scored in double figures five times in the month, including scoring 18 at King College at the beginning of the month, hitting eight of 16 shots from the floor against the Tornado. Watkins also had seven games with at least three rebounds, three games with at least five assists and five games with at least three steals, including two games with five takeaways in earning the award. For the 2010-2011 season, Micheala Watkins is leading the team and the SAC in averaging 3.0 steals per game. Hendrix was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC head Coaching staff over srififeiif^/^rAfetes fellow nominees and teammates. Josh Jordan and Drew Schauss. Hendrix led the Tornados men’s basketball program in the month of January in receiving this award, averaging 14.4 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game and 4.4 assists per game from the point guard position. Hendrix achieved double figures in scoring in six games, two of which eclipsed the 20 point mark, including a career-high 24 points on January 19th at Lincoln Memorial. Hendrix also recorded a month-high six rebounds on January 12th against Catawba, and also recorded six games with at least three assists and hit at least two three-pointers in four different games in January. For the 2010-2011 season, Hendrix leads the Tornados and is sixth in the SAC in assists and fifth in the SAC in assist/turnover ratio. These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of nine female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff Jordan powers Tornados past Erskine in overtime Josh Jordan recorded his second double double of the season, scoring 19 points and pulling down 14 rebounds as the Tornados survived an overtime thriller for the second straight season in Belk Arena, defeating the Erskine Flying Fleet on Monday night, 54-50. Jordan scored the first three points of the overtime period, staking Brevard to a lead they would not relinquish as the Tornados snapped a five game losing streak on Monday night. Gaither Hendrix and Drew Schauss added nine points apiece for Brevard as the Tornados overcame a nine-point first half deficit to record their first victory since Jan. 15. Filip Pejovic came off the bench to lead the Flying Fleet with 17 points, hitting three three- pointers in the game, while Casey Sorrell scored 11 points as Erskine fell dropped their fourth straight game. The teams tied the score up three times in the first nine minutes, as Jordan knotted the game up at nine apiece with 11:48 to play, but two possessions later, a three-pointer by Pejovic put the Flying Fleet up 12-9, giving them a lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the half Erskine would build a 10 point lead in the first half as Pej ovic drilled his third trey of the game, putting the hosts up 26-16 with 1:13 remaining, but Hendrix cut into the lead with a free throw with 34 seconds on the clock as the teams went into the break with Erskine up 26-17. Jordan scored the first six points of the second half for Jordan to cut the lead back to three, but Sorrell answered with a 6-0 run of his own as the teams battled throughout the second half Brevard cut the lead to one twice in the half at the 6:53 mark as Hendrix hit a three-pointer to cut it to 40-39 and Jordan hit a jumper in the paint to put it at 42-41, before Brevard took its first lead of the second half as Ryson Felder recorded a steal and outraced everyone to the basket for the layup to give Brevard the 43-42 lead with 4:06 on the clock. The Tornados seemed to take the lead for good with 20 seconds in the contest as Hendrix hit a jumper Following an Erskine timeout, Pejovic was fouled by Jordan with time running out and the junior from Prijepolje, Serbia hit both free throws to tie the game up and send it to overtime tied at 47. Jordan and Chris Gore traded free throws, before Jordan took a pass from Jermichael Tanner and went in for the basket, putting the Tornados up 50-48 with 3:06 remaining in the period. Hendrix expanded the lead to five, hitting a shot and converting the free throw after being fouled by Brandon Quarles. Pejovic answered with a pair of free throws with 2:03 remaining, but defense took over the remainder of the period until Darius Moose hit a free throw with seven seconds remaining as Brevard took home the 54-50 victory. The Tornados out-rebounded the Flying Fleet, 41 -34 and Josh Jordan added three blocked shots as Brevard controlled the paint against Erskine, scoring 24 points, while holding the Flying Fleet to 12. Erskine’s bench led the Flying Fleet’s offense, led by Pejovic’s 17 points as the Flying Fleet scored 29 points, keeping Erskine in the game. Brevard stays on the road as they head back into South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday evening, traveling to Jefferson City, Term, to take on the Carson-Newman Eagles. Tipoff in Holt Fieldhouse is set for 8 p.m.
