All discounts, including those for senior citizens, have been removed, said general manager Tracy Dailey. The order came down from the Zaxby’s corporation headquarters in Athens, Ga. “The head of marketing said the discounts were losing too much money,” Dailey said. “It wasn’t even a franchise decision.” Zaxby’s corporate office could not immediately confirm or deny Dailey’s claim. The question has been sent to upper-management, who has not yet responded. Former Zaxby’s employee and BC student Jonathan Hyde isn’t convinced the call to end the discount came from corporate. “I don’t know how much I would trust the people at the Brevard Zaxby’s,” he said. BC students aren’t the only ones affected. The discount on Tuesdays was previously made available for all college students and faculty in the area. Dailey says BC students and faculty didn’t turn out in great numbers on Tuesdays in general. “We usually have much more Blue Ridge Community College students coming in to use the discount,” she said. “I don’t eat at Zaxby’s,” said student Greg Woods. “Students should be hunting their food anyway.” There is no indication that the discount previously offered at the Brevard Zaxby’s will return. According to Dailey, the okay would have to come from corporate headquarters. The mystery behind the Student Plaza I Perspective I By Karen Love Contributor A majority of BC students have noticed the area blocked off between Moore Science and Myers Dining Hall, optimistically known as the Student Engagement Plaza. There have been plenty of questions and rumors flying around about the plaza: its purpose, why it is so un-aesthetically pleasing and if there are any plans to improve it in the works. The purpose of the plaza was to give the students another place to become engaged in an outdoor setting and to also add more green space to the campus, and to increase the college’s “waUcability.” The plaza was designed to be implemented in three phases. After the proposal was submitted to the city, they were concerned about the amount of silt and runoff going into the two storm drains that are in the area. The city has halted the process of adding mulch to the space and has requested that we submit a new proposal with a better plan of how to deal with silt and runoff Currently, a landscape architect is redesigning the area to minimize the amount of silt that is Phase 1: included blocking off that area of the parking lot to gauge the affects of the plaza on parking and traffic flow, and to asses the interest of the students. This phase was also going to include adding mulch the area to cover up the unsightly parking lines. Phase 2: ripping up the asphalt (and the mulch) and planting grass there. Phase 3: will transform the area into the Engagement Plaza with the addition of more seating, a staging area and possibly a fountain. These plans can be found on the portal, and may be displayed in the cafeteria lobby in the future. deposited into the storm drains. This proposal will be submitted to the city for revision and hopefully we will be able to proceed with the phases. There is really no way of knowing how long this project will take due to the city’s regulations and budgetary restrictions, but hopefully within the next year to two years there will be a completed, and engaging Student Plaza.
