Other activities the SAAC has participated W The participation from all members has allowed us to become a very successful organization on campus. // in included the MG Coffee Cart that allowed for student and faculty engagement, as well as “buddy” readings at the local elementary school that provides an opportunity for student-athletes to give back to the community. “The participation from all members has allowed us to become a very successful organization on campus,” said SAAC President Drew Schauss. Homeless shelter to open in Brevard By Melissa Sullebarger Staff Writer A new homeless shelter will serve Transylvania County in less than a year’s time. The Haven was created mid-January and is set to open in the next few months. The Haven’s goal is to meet the immediate needs of the rising numbers of homeless individuals in Transylvania County, and, ideally, assisting the individuals they come into contact with in getting back on the road to independence. This is a wonderful move for this area, but the project cannot go on without funding, and this is exactly the issue that the second-year IWIL (Institute for Women in Leadership) students are seeking to remedy. These young women are organizing an online auction as a part of their class. Fund Raising for a Nonprofit Organization, The fundraiser will be run through MissionFish, which is the partner charity of eBay. “The auction itselfwill run from April 1 through 15,” says IWIL Steering Committee Member Leighia Eggett. “There will also be a Buy Now option on many of the items.” In order for this to be effective, the women organizing this need donations of items to be auctioned for the Haven’s benefit. Artwork or similar items are always ideal, but creative donations will be gladly accepted as well, such as student groups volunteering their time or talents. The more items that are donated, the more money that can be raised, and the faster The Haven’s doors can be fully opened to those who need it most. Donations should be in by March 21. If you have any donations, questions, or anything else to offer, feel free to contact the IWIL students through Taylor Spivey: spiveytr@ brevard.edu, or any of the other second-year IWIL women, who live in North Village One.
