Page 6 Sports The Clarion \ Feb. 25, 2011 BC softball sweeps Bobcats in twinbill The Brevard College softball team was able to complete a sweep of the Georgia College & State Bobcats in a doubleheader on Wednesday. They downed the Bobcats 6-5 in the opener, and took the twin bill finale 5-3. The Tornados move to 9-3 on the season following the sweep of the Bobcats. In game one, the Bobcats opened up the scoring in the top half of the first when Anna Parker hit a one out single to score Whitney Okvist from second. Brevard was able to retum-fire and score a run in the bottom half Brittany Fowler hit a lead-off single. Chelsi Mallory moved Fowler to second when she hit a one-out single up the middle. Becca Curlee loaded the bases by drawing a two-out walk, which brought Sarah Carlos to the plate. Carlos hit an infield single to plate Fowler from third and nod things up at one run a piece. The Bobcats drew blood again in the third when Parker hit a solo homer to give them a 2-1 lead. Brevard was able to answer back in the bottom of the fourth. Brittany Jones was able to reach on a one-out error by the first baseman, allowing her to advance to second on the errant throw. Ally Davenport then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, and Jones moved up to third. Georgia College & State struck back for three runs in the fifth when Haley Burnett hit a two- run single and Lindsey Conway singled up the middle to score Burnett. The Bobcats led the Tornados 5-3 heading into the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, BC had two outs against them when Kayla Dorsey came to the plate. Dorsey doubled to deep centerfield, which brought Emily Boykin in as a pinch-runner for Dorsey. Curlee followed up with a single, and advanced to second on the throw home, as Boykin held up at third. Carlos stepped into the batter’s box and hit a single up the middle, plating both Boykin and Curlee, making it 5-5 with two-outs in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos moved up to second on the throw by the centerfielder, who was attempting to throw Curlee out at home. Sarah Carlos finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, with three RBI, and scored the winning run. Chelsi Mallory went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Brittany Fowler went 2-of-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The Tornados took an early 3-0 lead in game two when the Bobcats’ pitcher, Chelsie Huffman walked the bases loaded with two outs, setting the stage for Sarah Carlos. Carlos roped a three- run triple to left-centerfield. Georgia College & State answered in the third when Shahlisa Shirley hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kati Pickowitz, making it 3-1 in favor of the Tornados. Brevard extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning when Kayla Dorsey singled home Ally Davenport. Brevard was able to add to their lead and make it 5-1 in the sixth. Brittany Jones hit a lead-off double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ally Davenport. Meredith Davenport was able to plate Jones from third on a groundout. The Bobcats scared the Tornados by scoring two in the seventh, but freshman starter Alyssa Miller was able to hold off the late push by Georgia College & State. Miller went the distance, adding a fifth complete game to her 2011 resume. She was hit for three runs, two earned on six hits. Despite walking seven she picked up her fifth win of the season, moving to 5-1 on the year. Huffman was charged with the loss for the Bobcats, as she fell to 1-3 on the year. The Tornados are back on the diamond Saturday, February 26th when they travel to Virginia Intermont. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Brevard survives late scare from King Champ Stuart hit a pair of doubles and drove in four RBIs and Randy O’Dell added three hits and drove in three as the Brevard College baseball team survived a late scare by King College in defeating the Tornado at King F ield, 13-11. Kevin Hamilton picked up the win for Brevard as the Tornados improve to 5-6 on the season, while Dustin Haithcox picked up his first save. The Tornados scored two more in the third as Stuart connected on a Houser pitch and drilled it down the left field line, scoring Steele Myers and O’Dell with two out in the inning, going up 7-0 to stake Brevard starter Joseph Lepore to a 7-0 lead. The first six batters for Brevard in the top of the fourth reached base and came around to score as the Tornados built their largest lead of the 2011 season at 13-0. O’Dell followed with a double to plate Christopoulos and Brinson, and Clark and O’Dell came around to score, but King relief pitcher Nick Melcher escaped the inning as Merriken hit into a double play to limit the damage. A triple from the King's Josh Huffman started the comeback in the bottom of the sixth as he came around to score on a single from Jordan Woullard to put the first run on the board for the Tornado. Three more runs scored in the seventh to cut the score to 13-4, giving way to the rally in the bottom of the ninth. The Tornado rally in the ninth saw the team send 11 players to the plate with Bryant Walker doing most of the damage, clearing the bases with a three RBI double with two outs. Steven Mueller brought the tying run to the plate in driving home Walker to put the score at 13-11, but Haithcox came in and retired Josh Huffman on a fly ball to right field to end the game. Brevard returns home to Gil Coan Field this weekend as they host SouthAtlantic Conference opponent Newberry College in a three game weekend series. First pitch onFriday, February 25th, will come at 2 p.m. with the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Wolves on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
