Page 4 The Clarion \ March 4, 2011 New flag flies at BC STAFF EDITORIAL On Feb. 28, 2011 around 4 p.m. Joseph Brown, Director of Facilities, and Donnie McCall, a maintenance employee, lowered the new American flag in the residential quad. Not only did they take the flag down for the coming inclement weather, they took extra care to fold the flag as per tradition. The Clarion editors would like to thank them as a follow up to a previous article on our school’s flag situation, and also encourage our readers to do the same. We extend this thanks to Judy Jones who advocated the old flag be replaced long before our article was published. She was instrumental in getting the replacement flag flown. While we understand it takes money, which the institution may not have at the moment, to install lights in the residential quad, but this should be the next step in handling the method by which BC honors our country. This is a very exciting season for me, because the light, cool, refreshing, and certainly flavorful beers of spring are here. The Kolschs, Wits, Pale Ales, and Lagers will be, and have been taking to the bottle this month. Among those beers is Highland’s Little Hump, an American Pale named for a mountain. If you’d like to visit Little Hump, it is on the Tennessee-North Carolina border in Avery County. At a height of 5207 ft. it seems to be a decent climb. The beer is an American Pale Ale, a style best described as the pinnacle of American beers. It pours a lovely golden color with a great head (seriously, great, even in a bottle). The nose is that of noble hops with a touch of two-row barley. It has the great flavor of Amarillo hops, which lend a great bittering value to compliment the nose; tones of grapefruit and citrus are there, but overall it is crisp. The malt qualities of the beer offer a great balance. It is sweet without becoming tart, bitter without becoming “sour” (Note: sour beer is due to an infection from bacteria, never call a beer sour unless it is truly awful with green Spring Break Beer Suggestions: • Best suggestion for any beer, anytime, anywhere: keep it local. • If you’re sticking around here, grab a 12 pack of long necks from Highland. Their spring seasonal is here, just in time for the break. •Headed to the Coast of Carolina? Nab some of Duck-Rabbit’s refreshing dark beer or I highly recommend Mother Earth’s Kolsch while lying about. •Charlotte area your destination? Head to Little Robert’s, a great beer shop that has the largest selection of beer I’ve seen outside of Colorado. They even trade growlers. Grab a Pisgah Growler and bring it by. I’m sure he has something worth trading for. • Atlanta has a few great breweries. Among them are Sweetwater (a mid-range, regional brewery) and Atlanta Brewing Co. located in Midtown. My choice for break is Sweetwater’s IPA stuff floating in it). It is nicely carbonated and this becomes a good trait for this beer, keeping it crisp and clean finishing. I’d love to try this beer on tap. The fresh taste is something only a local beer can have and this beer takes full advantage of this. 1 know I’m taking a 12 pack on break, you should too.
