Banff film festival sells out at BC

Banff Mountain Film festival has sold out
on it's sixteenth stop at Brevard College. This
year, the Cycling Team and Outing Club had the
privilege of attending a preview of this year's
selection of films, and picking from them the
ones they thought stood out. Twelve films will
be shown this weekend, each one unique in their
portrayal of humans and their fervor to push
athletic boundaries.
Among them we have the quintessential
mountain bike film, an artistic endeavor in it's
filming, as well as it's soundtrack. Many other
mountain bike film soundtracks are heavy,
aggressive and in poor taste. “Life Cycles,”
contains music from Bonobo, Explosions in
the Sky, and Blockhead in an attempt to portray
the mountain biker as more than an adrenaline
pumped “dude.”

school's proximity to Pisgah National Forest.
“Pisgah is known nationally for it's trails and
it's part of the reason I came to Brevard. The
film festival is just another great thing about this
place. Elopefully 1 can get a ticket.”
“The Swiss Machine” ensnares alpinists with
aerial footage of speed climber Ueli Steck in
his attempts to break climbing records all over
the world until his feats bring him to our own
country, and he tackles the highest walls in
Yo Semite.
The film “Eastern Rises” is third on the list.
“Eastern Rises” won Best Film on Mountain
Sports by the festival directors and showcases
fly fishing in the furthest east region of Russia,
the Kamchatka Peninsula. The area is teaming
with wildlife: bears, huge mouse eating trout,
bugs, and even Sasquatch sightings.
The Cycling Team and Outing Club are
hosting the film festival again this year in the
Porter Center for the Performing Arts. The doors
open Friday and Saturday night at 6pm so that
patrons have an opportunity to interact with this
years sponsors.
This year’s French Broad level sponsors are

The Hub atBackcounty Outdoors; WNCW 88.7;
Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School; and
Headwaters Outfitters.
Davidson River level sponsors include
Kiwi Gelato; Poppies Market and Cafe
Brevard Rock Gym; Pura Vida; Climbmax:
Landmark Learning; Appalachian Mountain
Institute; Black Dome Mountain Sports;
Bracken Mountain Bakery; and Navitat.
A raffle benefiting the Bracken Mountain
Project, a trail system within Brevard city limits,
will commence after intermission.
BC prepares for commencement
The academic quad was roped off earlier in
the week in preparation for commencement
exercises to be held in May.
“Our goal is to enhance the ambience of
the area and to avoid traffic patterns in the
grass during Commencement,” said Joseph
Brown, Director of Facilities in an e-mail to
the campus.
In order to allow the grass seed time to take
root the lawn of the Academic Quad will be
roped off for at least three weeks, according
to Brown.
Nominations for commencement speakers are
also being taken. Students and faculty should
submit their nominations via e-mail to Judy
Jones by Friday, March 25.
In addition, a Grad Finale will be held in the
Reserve Dining Room on Tuesday from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. More details about the Grad Finale can
be found on page three.
