Page 4 Sports The Clarion \ March 25, 2011 Tornados make it four straight The Tornados picked up a pair of non conference victories as they took down the Columbia College Fighting Koalas in a twinbill at Sutton Softball Field on Wednesday evening. Brevard took the opener 6-3, and despite five errors, won game two 10-9. The Tornados moved to 23-8 on the season while the Koalas are now 6-20. Brevard opened the scoring right out of the gate in the top of the first when Brittany Fowler drew a leadoff walk. Kayla Dorsey moved Fowler to second with a sacrifice bunt. Kayla Clemens came to the plate with two-outs and hit a single to left centerfield bringing Fowler around to score the first run of the game, making it 1-0 in favor of Brevard. The Koalas retum-fired in the bottom-half of the first when Brittany Koester doubled to left field, and was later brought home when Kacie Davenport traded places with her teammate. Davenport roped a double to right centerfield to bring in Koester, tying things up at one run a piece. Brevard was able to regain the lead in the third when they struck for a run. Chelsi Mallory led off the inning with a double to right centerfield. Dorsey moved Mallory to third on a sacrifice bunt, bringing Becca Curlee to the plate. Curlee hit a fly ball to deep left field, though it was caught, Mallory was able to tag up at third and score, putting Brevard up 2-1. Columbia struck again in the fourth wit a pair of runs. After two quick outs, Sarah Gibson was hit by a pitch bringing Brittany Barr to the plate. Barr smoked a two-run homer off of the scoreboard in centerfield to give Columbia a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth. The Tornados were quick to respond as Mallory evened things up in the fifth when she hit a solo homer to lead-off the inning. It was Mallory’s team leading fifth homer, as she made it 3-3. Sarah Carlos did her best to help the cause by hitting a two-out triple but was left stranded. Brevard jumped back on top in the sixth when they touched starter, Alexis Lucas for three runs. Emily Boykin led off the inning with a single back up the middle. Meredith Davenport moved Boykin to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Fowler put Boykin on third with a fly out in the next at-bat. Dorsey was next up and drew a walk. After intentionally walking Mallory, the Koalas had to deal with bases loaded and the Tornados’ clean-up hitter, Clemens, at the plate. Clemens ripped a single through the right side bringing in Boykin and Dorsey, putting Brevard up 5-3. Curlee was next to the plate and she came through driving one through the left side, scoring Mallory from second. Curlee’s RBI single gave BC a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Martika Elmore picked up her 12th win of the season after surrendering three runs on five hits in seven innings of work for the Tornados. Elmore struck out nine and is now 12-5 on the season. Lucas was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work for the Fighting Koalas. At the plate, Brevard was led by Clemens who was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win. Mallory added a multi-hit day going 2-for-3 with her fifth home run of the season. Fowler and Carlos each had two hits in the Tornados victory. Columbia was first to strike in the nightcap of the twin-bill as Alyssa Miller walked in a run in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Brittany Koester The Tornados trailed 1 -0 after an inning of play. The Tornados added to their lead in the third. Davenport led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error Fowler was next up and she had a bunt single. With runners at first and second, Dorsey laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing Mallory to the plate. Mallory hit a shallow fly ball to right field. The Koalas’ second baseman ranged back to haul in the ball, but was unable to throw out Davenport at home giving Brevard a 3-1 lead. Clemens roped a single in the next at-bat bringing Fowler into score and putting BCup4-l. Brevard rallied together with two outs to regain the lead in the top of the fifth. Clemens roped a double down the right field line. Curlee was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, which brought Carlos to the plate for the Tornados. Carlos singled up the middle, bringing Clemens in from second, giving Brevard a 6-5 edge. Following the single by Carlos, Jones drew a walk, loading the bases. Boykin drew another walk, making it 7-5. Davenport stepped into the batter’s box and hit a grounder towards short. With the throw on target it looked as though the inning would come to a close, however the first baseman couldn’t handle the throw bringing in two more unearned runs, giving Brevard a 9-5 lead. Koester drove a three run homer to dead centerfield in the bottom of the fifth, bringing Columbia within one, as they trailed the Tornados 9-8. A pair of singles and a walk helped the Koalas bring home another in the fifth as they tied it up 9-9. Mallory gave Brevard the lead back again in the sixth when she hit her second home run of the doubleheader Mallory’s long ball was her sixth of the season and it gave BC a 10-9 lead. Miller was the starter for Brevard and lasted five innings. She was touched for nine runs, four earned as she picked up her 10th win of the season. Miller is now 10-3 on the season. Elmore entered the game in the sixth for Brevard, and struck out four in a two-inning save. It was her first save of the season. Brittany Barr was the starter for Columbia. She lasted all seven and surrendered 10 runs, seven earned. Barr fell to 3-10 on the season. Offensively, the Tornados exploded for 10 runs on 11 hits with Boykin leading the way. She was 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Mallory went 1 -for-3 with a homer Davenport added a multi hit game with a pair of RBI in the nightcap. The Tornados are back in action on Saturday, March 26th when they play host to the Catawba Indians for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the Brevard College Softball Field.
