Page 4 The Clarion \ April 1,2011 Softball drop two in Greenville, 5-0 & 4-3 The Brevard College softball team was swept by the Tusculum Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon in a twin bill hosted by Tusculum. The Tornados fell 5-0 in the opener, and Tusculum came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Brevard 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader Brevard fell to 23-10 on the season, and 3-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. Tusculum improved their conference record to 5-1 and are now 24-9 on the season. The Pioneers struck first in the opener when Ashley Burke singled home Taylor MacDonald in the bottom of the first inning, giving Tusculum a 1 -0 lead. MacDonald reached on a single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She got to third by way of a wild pitch before being brought home on the Burke single. Tusculum added on to their 1-0 lead in the second inning when with the bases loaded, starting pitcher, Martika Elmore walked in a run, putting the Pioneers up 2-0. Lindsey Umberger hit a bases loaded, two-out, base clearing double to put Tusculum on-top 5-0, which is were the score remained for the rest of the game. Elmore was charged with the loss, falling to 12-6 on the season. Elmore went all six innings for Brevard as she was touched for five runs on seven hits. Erin Searcy picked up the win for Tusculum. She moved to 11-7 on the season. At the plate, Brevard had just three hits. Chelsi Mallory, Kayla Clemens and Sarah Carlos each delivered a hit for the Tornados. Carlos’ was a double. In the night cap, Brevard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kayla Dorsey hit a one-out double to left field. Mallory was next to the plate and singled through the left side, advancing Dorsey to third. Clemens brought Dorsey in with a single of her own. The Tornados increased their lead by a run in the second. Carlos led off the inning with a walk and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt laid down by Brittany Jones. Emily Boykin followed Jones by smoking a double to right centerfield, scoring Carlos from second to make it 2-0. There wasn’t any scoring following the second, until Brevard was able to make it 3-0 in the sixth. Mallory hit a one-out single and was able to score when Becca Curlee ripped a two-out double, putting BC up by three. Things looked good for the Tornados, but the Pioneers’ bats awoke in the bottom of the sixth. Tusculum struck for four runs putting them on top 4-3 heading into the seventh inning. Brevard was unable to respond in the seventh as they fell 4-3. Alyssa Miller was tagged for the loss as she fell to 11-4 on the season. Miller went all six innings for Brevard and was touched for four runs on eight hits in the loss. The Tornados are back at home on Saturday, April 1 st, when they play host to South Atlantic Conference rival Mars Hill College. Brevard is set to square off with the Lions at 1 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field. Football adds four commitments to the 2011 roster Head Coach Paul Hamilton and his staff, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department, is pleased to announce the addition of four commitments to the 2011 Brevard College Football Team. Landon Allen, Nick Hatch, Marcus Lambert and Nasif Maj eed have all committed to coming to Brevard College and joining the football team for the fall 2011 season. The 2011 signing class is now up to 16 players as the Tornados continue their preparations for the upcoming 2011 season. Allenjoins the Tornados from Oakboro, N.C., where he played under Coach Mark Little at West Stanly High School. Allen was a three-year letterman with the varsity football team and was an All-County and All-Conference selection. A Team Captain for the Colts, Allen won the Defensive MVP and the Team Player of the Year award. In addition to football, Allen was a four- year letterman on the Track & F ield team, being selected to the All-Conference team. He was also the Field MVP, a Regional and State qualifier and was a member of the 1,000 pound club. Off This space for rent! He is the son of Larry and Donna Allen. Hat joins the Tornados from Winston-Salem, N.C., where he played under Coaches Josh McGee and Greg King at Ronald W. Reagan High School. Hatch was voted the Reagan Player of the Year, having received the WXII Channel 12 Play of the Week and the Flow Player of the Week. He was also selected to the Central Piedmont Conference 4A All-Conference team and All-County teams, as well as the Offensive MVP. He also ran for 1,000+ yards rushing in the last two years setting Reagan rushing records. He also was a four-year letterman on the varsity wrestling and track teams. On the mat. Hatch was an All-Conference selection, setting the school record for wins. He also was named to the All-Conference track team. Hatch leaves Reagan as the school’s record holder in the bench press, lifting 375 pounds. Off the field. Hatch was a Crosby Scholar and on the Honor Roll. Hatch also spend a lot of time in the community in Winston- Salem going on annual mission trips, as well as serving as a monthly food pantry volunteer and a science museum volunteer He is the son of Ben and Joy Hatch. Majeed joins the Tornados from Charlotte, N.C., where he played under Coach Andrew Howard at Phillip O. Berry Academy. He was selected the Charlotte Observer Player of the Week in both August 2010 and November 2010. Off the field, Majeed was on the A-B Honor Roll and the A Honor Roll. He is the son of Nasif Rashad Majeed.
