April 1,2011 I The Clarion Page 5 Milet takes home Criterium title at Clemson Michael Palevo, Tyler Crotts and Brandon Milet all had podium finishes and Milet won the Men’s B Criterium as the Tornados competed at Clemson University this past weekend, taking on 14 different teams and schools in the two day event. The weather was not willing to cooperate with the temperatures in the high 40’s and rain. The first event started off with the Men’s A team which consisted of Corey Meyer, Marshal Hartley, Michael Palevo and Bryan Underwood, in the process they got a 5th place in the Team Trial with a time of 20:35 and the Men’s B team consisted of Keith Marek, Caleb Welbom, Brandon Milet and Lewis Gaffney got 2nd with a time of 21:22. By the time the road races started the skies were threatening with rain and thunder and the racers were ready to race. The Men’s A team raced 60 miles. As usual it started off very aggressive with a lot of small breaks not able to get away from the field and with ten miles into the race the elastic finally snapped as Michael Palevo got into the winning break with two guys from Lees-McRae and two guys from Mars Hill. The Lead built up to five minutes with Corey Meyer, Scott Hoffner, Bryan Underwood and Marshal Hartley in the chase group. With all the major teams having teammates in the break it was almost sure the break was going to stick. In the end Palevo finished 4th, Meyer finished in the top 10 and Hoffner, Hartley and Underwood scoring points in the top 20. In the B race they raced 40 miles. The Brevard Tornados rode very aggressive getting three guys in the winning break and Keith Marek lead the Tornado’s home with a 3rd place finish, Brandon Milet finishing just behind him and Caleb Welbom getting a top 10. Despite the terrible weather the Tornado’s had a very good day of racing. On Sunday the Brevard Tornado’s Cycling Team competed in the criterium. The Men’s B team started out they day with a forty-five minute race. Like the day before they raced very aggressive with Lewis Gaffney getting off the front on the very first lap once he got caught Caleb Welbom got into the next break staying away for a while. Tyler Crotts played a very important role in making sure no one was able to reach his teammate up the road. Brandon Milet stayed away and was able to out sprint his competitor at the end for the first win of the season The next race was the Men’s A Crit which was sixty minutes. In the Men’s A race like the day before it was hard to get away from the field, but with about 40 minutes left a group got away with Corey Meyer and Scott Hoffner able to get into the break. They soon opened up a large gap with Michael Palevo, Bryan Underwood and Marshal Hartley blocking the chase group to insure their teammates were going to stay away. The lead group soon lapped the field and the group was back together At this point it was nearly impossible to tell who was in the lead group and who was lapped. With one lap to go Hartley hit the front while Underwood, Palevo, Hoffner and Meyer in the middle of the pack. It was a huge sprint finish with Meyer and Hoffner getting a top 15 spot.
