Humanities senior projects By Patrick Veilleux Staff Writer The semester is wrapping up, whether you are suffering from senioritis, polio, or you are a freshman completing your first year at Brevard College; perhaps all three positions apply. The seniors in the Humanities division are working hard to complete their last major endeavor at Brevard College; senior projects. The projects are not new to seniors, men and women such as Chris Dixon and Michelle Norris have been researching and working hard for close to a year “1 have been working on this project pretty solid since the beginning of last summer It has been a lot of work but very enjoyable and rewarding at the same time,” said Dixon. Dixon has been studying the effects of the sixties had on non profit organizations; in particular he looked into the War on Poverty and the Civil Rights Movement. After interning in Community Family Life Services, he focused his research on the effects the sixties had on the organization. “It was interesting to find out how they got to where they are now,” said Dixon. After graduation, Dixon plans on working in the non-profit field. Prof Margaret Brown has overseen the preparations the historians have made to get the projects to where they are now. Clint Keisler, Kathryn Powell, and Chris Dixon have all devoted themselves to their respective research. “These students are very well-prepared. Attending their presentations will make anyone on campus feel proud of the college and what we do here,” said Brown. The English majors have also been preparing their presentations, Michelle Norris is planning on presenting her paper “Education and Literacy: The Key to Successful Rehabilitation.” “My paper deals with Literacy Programs in the Juvenile Justice System. The research 1 found discussed the effect of literacy programming on self esteem. Literacy programs are shown to improve the self esteem of those involved,” said Norris. Norris will be spending next semester teaching students before she graduates, this is no new experience. She has already spent time tutoring at the Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center, a juvenile detention facility in Swannanoa, NC. Michelle will be presenting alongside Mosisah Mavity, David Alexander, and Elana Baumann; on behalf of the humanities division and the English Major She is an English Major and a Criminal Justice Minor The presentations will take place on April 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. in MG 125. Come and show the seniors your support.
