Page 6 Sports The Clarion \ April 15,2011 Softball drops two in final road match The Brevard College softball team fell in both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Carson-Newman College on Wednesday afternoon. Despite taking an early lead in the opener, the Tornados fell 5-2. Brevard couldn’t get the bats going in game two as they dropped in 9-0 in five innings. Brevard fell to 28-17 on the season and 6-10 in South Atlantic Conference Play, while Carson- Newman improved to 35-12 on the year, and 13-3 in SAC contests. The Tornados drew first blood in the opener after Kayla Clemens delivered a leadoff double to right centerfield. Sarah Carlos moved Clemens up to third with a single down the leftfield line. With runners on the comers, Emily Boykin did the job with a fly ball to centerfield, scoring Clemens from third, putting Brevard up 1-0. The Eagles added to their two-run lead in the fourth when Amber Hewitt laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Sara Kelley from third, putting them up 4-1. Carson-Newman added one more Lindsay Hostetter rallied back to put the Tornados up with her three set victory on court no. 2 and Claire Dilknan clinched the victory for Brevard with her three-set win on court no. 3 as the Tornados defeated Anderson University on Tuesday afternoon, 6-3, setting up a winner- take-all showdown at Wingate University this week for the regular season conference title. The Tornados improve to 14-6, 7-1 in conference play, while the # 12 regionally ranked Trojans fall to 9-7, 6-3 in the SAC. Lindsay Shaeffer and Hostetter tied up the match on court no. 1 with their 8-4 victory, while Dillman and Michelle Prata gave Brevard the 2-1 advantage with their 8-4 victory on court no. 2. In singles action, Lauren Trumbull tied the match up again, topping Prata, 6-1,6-3 on court no. 4. The loss was Praia’s first SAC defeat of the season as the freshman from Chapel Hill, N.C. fell to 7-1 in SAC play on the year. Hostetter battled Avery Owens on court no. 2 in the defining match of the afternoon. Hostetter led 5-2 in the first set, but Owens rallied to take the next five games, going up 1-0 over Hostetter with the 7-5 victory. However, the junior from Livonia, Mich, won the second set 6-2 and captured the third with her 6-3 win to put Brevard within one match of taking home the win. Dillman delivered on court no. 4, following Hostetter in dropping her first set 6-4, but run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kelley. Martika Elmore was saddled with the loss and fell to 16-9 on the season. She was touched for five runs on seven hits and struck out three through six innings of work. Mary Shealy picked up her 31st win of the season as she moved to 31-10 after the win. Brevard was unable to get any offense going in the nightcap of the twinbill. Despite trailing just 2-0 after three innings, a seven run fourth by the Eagles dropped the Tornados 9-0 in five innings. Alyssa Miller was charged with the loss and fell to 12-8 on the season. Shealy picked up her second win the doubleheader and improved to 32-10 on the season. The Tornados are back in action on Saturday, April 16th when they play host to Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears are in town on the Tornados Senior Day. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field. Dillman rallied back to defeat Halbert 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Tornados. Labus and Emily Weiland closed out the match on court no. 6 in a light rain, with the duo splitting the first two sets as Labus won set one, 7-6, and Weiland rallied to take the second one 6- 3. Labus and Weiland battled back and forth in the final set before the BC sophomore captured the win in the tiebreaker, 7-6. The Tornados travel to take on the Wingate Bulldogs this weekend at the WU Tennis Complex, with the winner of the match claiming the top seed at the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament and the overall regular season team title. First serve in doubles competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. Men's golf takes 9th at SAC Championship Jonathan Poole shot the low round of the day for the Tornados, carding a 77 through the windy conditions at the Rock Bam Golf & Spa on Tuesday aftemoon as Brevard finished up the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference toumament in ninth place overall. T.J. Hoard led the Tomados in the event, finishing the final round with an 80 as he came in 15th overall in the event, narrowly missing out on All-Toumament honors. The freshman carded a three round score of 232, the sixth- lowest score by a Tomado men’s golfer in the conference toumament. Poole began the third round of the toumament in a tie for 34th and improved his position by ten spots with his second 77 of the toumament to finish in a tie for 24th overall with a three- round score of 238. Thomas Rennie and Michael Stamper also took the field for Coach Matt Adamski, with Rennie finishing the two-day toumament with a score of 251 to finish tied for 42nd. Women's golf finishes lOtli in SAC tournament Alisiya Klochkova guided the Tomados to a 10th place finish at the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference women’s golf toumament, carding a 257 over the two-day, three-round event to finish 37th overall. Klochkova recorded a 94 in the third round, capping off her third SAC toumament to finish 37th in the event, while Ashley Allen continued her consistent play in the toumament, finishing 48th overall. Rebecca Schoonover made a 14 stroke improvement in the final round, carding her lowest round of the toumament to finish 49th overall, while Kelsey Wyatt rounded out the group in 50th overall.
