Page 6 Sports The Clarion \ April 22, 2011 Brevard athletic award ceremony set for May 2 The Brevard College Athletic Department and BC Athletic Director Kim Pate is pleased to announce the 2010-2011 BC Athletic Award Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 2nd, in the Porter Center for Performing Arts, with the ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m. "The annual athletics awards ceremony has become a much anticipated event that our student-athletes and coaches look forward to as a way to cap off our year and celebrate our student-athletes achievements both on and off the court," said Pate. "I would encourage all of our fans and supporters to come out and support our student-athletes for this special event." Several changes to the ceremonial events this year include a special cookout for all Brevard College senior athletes on Friday, April 29th, at noon alongside King’s Creek, sponsored by the BC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. All BC faculty are invited to attend the cookout, as Brevard honors the 2010-2011 seniors who have completed their eligibility. A special Senior Three named to All-SAC team Lindsay Shaeffer and Lindsay Hostetter were named to the 2011 All-SAC First Team, and Claire Dillman was selected to the All-SAC Second Team as the Tornados had three players recognized by the Head Coaches of the South Atlantic Conference as reported by the league ofiice. The All-SAC First Team recognition was Shaeffer’s third, the senior from Perry sburg, Ohio becomes the first BC student-athlete in any sport to be named to the All-Conference team for three consecutive seasons. Shaeffer went 13-7 at the no. 1 spot in singles for Coach Nicole Bumgarner this season, going 6-2 in conference play. The First Team selection was Hostetter’s first, after being selected to the postseason Second Team last year The junior from Livonia, MI also went 13-7 in singles play, 6-3 in the SAC at no. 2 singles, and made the transition in the middle of the season to playing no. 1 doubles with Shaeffer and the duo went 5-2 on court no. 1. Dillman was a Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection, and finished out her sophomore campaign with a 15-6 record overall, going a perfect 9-0 in conference play at the no. 3 singles position in garnering postseason accolade. Dillman is currently on an 11 match winning streak, starting back on March 15th, and clinched the BC victories over Anderson and Carson-Newman to propel the Tornados to the three-seed in the upcoming 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Media Presentation will also be presented at the Award Ceremony. The Tornados will also be presenting a special recognition to Dr Drew Van Horn during the award ceremony, recognizing Dr Van Horn’s many contributions to the college and athletic department during his tenure as President. The Athletic Department will also be holding a special recognition in memory of Brian Johnson, a long-standing Tornado Club member, former Trustee of the College and supporter of all student-athletes for his outstanding dedication to the BC Athletic Department. During the ceremony, the Tornados will also recognize the 2010-2011 Male and Female Athlete of the Year, among the candidates nominated by the BC Head Coaching staff This year’s nominees include: Kelvin Jeter, Josh Roper, Tristan Cowie, Scott McCormick, Ricky Wallace, Lindsay Shaeffer, Martika Elmore, Rebecca Schoonover, Amanda Metcalf, Micheala Watkins, Chelsea Freeman and Angela By Jermichael Tanner Staff Writer The white team defeated the blue team by a final score of 24-0 on Sunday at the 2011 BC football spring game held at Brevard High School. The white team’s offense was lead by rising senior Derek Church, as he managed to break the scoring plane twice during the game. The finale of the day was a pass from Cole Weeks to Eric Watts that Watts took 76 yards into the end zone. The white team’s defense was lead by a few regulars accustomed to making plays. Rising seniors Prince Simunyu, Michael Gist, and Salonik Amos headed the white team’s defense Canale. Other awards which will be given out include the Senior GPA Award, Champs Cup Challenge award recognizing the teams that have excelled in life-skill initiatives, and individual team awards which will be presented by the coaches of the Tornados 18 varsity sports. Special team accomplishments and recognitions from the South Atlantic Conference will also be recognized during the ceremony. Members of the community and Tornado Club who have been influential in their support of Tornados Athletics this season will also be recognized. A dessert reception, sponsored by the Tornado Club, will be held in honor of the student- athletes, parents, faculty and staff in the Francis Pavilion of the Porter Center following the Awards ceremony.
