Post Secret, the art project of Maryland- based multimedia artist and psychologist Frank Warren, released its application for mo bile devices this week, and in three days it has become the fourth most downloaded app. I am sure many students, staff and faculty have at least heard of Post Secret and the international accolades it has received. If you have not, the project began as an experi ment in 2005 when Warren started leaving blank postcards in coffee shops, on campuses regionally and anywhere he thought people would respond. The instructions were simple: mail in a secret, anonymously, and decorate the blank post card as you saw fit. The caveat was that it had to be something that you had never told anyone before: your deepest dark est fear, a childhood experience, witness to a crime, a sexual foray, anything. The postcards started to come in and War ren began his blog: Post Secret. I remember when I first started reading the blog in 2005: a postcard was mailed in about a boy who had put a brown recluse spider in his sister’s bed. It bit her, and she had to have her leg amputated. He had lived with that secret his entire life and never told anyone. The secrets range from happy thoughts that aren’t really secrets, to witnesses to rape and murder and everything in between. The weight lifted off of some of these people’s 'Parallel Explorations' in Spiers Gallery ByThea Dunn Layout and Design “I like clay, I like form, I like gesture; that’s why I’m here,” artist Rob Pulleyn said as he introduced himself and his ceramics work to the attendees of the Spiers Gallery opening of “Parallel Explorations” in the Sims Art Center last Friday, Sept. 2. Walking into the gallery, David Sheldon, instructor of art in drawing, describes the exhibit as “wonderfully diverse, interesting, and full of energy with dynamic line and color There is dialog between all pieces in both 3 dimensions and 2 dimensions.” People throughout the community came to see the art and to support the artists. Interim President Charles Teague and his wife attended the opening, along with many students of the college. Freshman art major Elizabeth Graham said, “It was well planned out and it really touched on the artists’ best work.” “Parallel Explorations” showcases Joyce Blunk, Rob Pulleyn and Gayle Paul. Joyce Blunk is showing her assemblage pieces, Rob Pulleyn has his ceramics, and Gayle Paul is displaying her paintings. There are also a few joint pieces created by the artists. All of the pieces come together to create a truly worthwhile showcase. The exhibition runs through Sept. 30. The Spiers Gallery is open Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. shoulders is immense, and the idea that they can do so anonymously without embarrassing their families, themselves, or ruining their professional lives is powerfully cathartic. Saturday marks the end of National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week, and in 2008, Warren teamed up with 1-800-SUICIDE. The partnership has helped save many lives. People who would not normally seek help have done so, and readers of the website have reached out to those who have posted their secrets and need help. This project gives me hope for community and the human potential. Post Secret is just building steam. Warren has been touring college campuses for the past several years giving speeches and encourag ing people to release, and help each other His tour is scheduled to stop at UNC-Asheville on Nov. 15. More information about Frank Warren, his tour—and of course, the secrets themselves—can be found on the Web at www.postsecret.com. Joyce Blunk, Gayle Paul, and Rob Pulleyn In this issue...
