Page 6 Arts & Life The Clarion \ Sept. 16, 2011 JABALI AFRIKA RETURNS Our music makes you dance, it uplifts the soul and it educates you. Coming to see Jabali Afrika, you become part of the act, because we kill that barrier between the audience and the band. - Joseck Asikoye the experience that is Jabali Afrika. The band’s 250 shows a year and 98 percent rebooking rate say it all, but there’s no replacement for hearing their authentic African drumming rhythms and electric guitars in a live setting. Jabali means "rock" in Kiswahili, and Mayosi expands the group’s afro-rock sound, which blends authentic African music with the modem styles that have borrowed from it. Fans will recognize the trademark Jabali Afrika sound: powerful percussion and big vocal harmonies of Joseck Asikoye, Justo Otongo, Dumisizwe Bhembe and Victor Savani. By Cassie Smatana staff Reporter Sixteen years ago, the members of Jabali Afrika would meet on a large rock to plan and dream about their musical future. Today their award-winning, innovative melange of traditional spirituals and rock-reggae arrangements is a pillar of world music festivals and college concerts worldwide. Lucky for us they are coming to Brevard College. The Brevard College music department is holding a faculty showcase at the Scott Concert Hall in the Porter Center, at Brevard College on September 30th at 7:00pm. The event is free, so come out and watch our talented faculty members as they perform. Call (828) 884-8330 for any further questions and more details. BC Arts: Gallery Showings! The “Parallel Explorations” Exhibition is still open for viewing! The works of Paul, Blunk and Pulleyn will all be on display, as they exhibit their unique talents of collaboration of all different types of mediums into a cohesive and beautiful show. The gallery will be open from 8:00am-3:00pm on week days until the 30th of September The next gallery showing will be an exhibition form one of Brevard College’s very own faculty members. Brie Castell joined the Brevard College Art Department family last year in the spring as Photography I teacher, and her gallery in Ashville become very popular among her students. Castell’s gallery will be located in the Spiers Gallery from October 7th until November 4th. All of the gallery events will be held in the Spiers Art Gallery, located in Sims Art Building, and are free; all gallery openings will have refreshments on hand. Down town Brevard is a wonderful place to explore. With all of its different shops and galleries, there is always something interesting to do. September 23rd from 5:00pm-9:00pm will be Brevard’s 4th Gallery Walk.
