Lady Tornados win first away game By Chantel Azevedo staff Reporter The lady Tornados traveled to Black Mountain, North Carolina last Tuesday to battle against the Montreal College Cavaliers where they recorded a 1-0 defeat and in turn handed the Cavaliers their second loss of the season. The Brevard College Tornados came out firing at all angles as the match started off quickly. Their legs ached and their bodies were fatigued, but their hearts were filled with passion as they stepped onto the field when the first whistle blew. Although Brevard came out strong outshooting their opponent 10-5, Montreal was first to open up all attack having an early scoring chance in the 23rd minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Webster was able to keep the Tornados in the game making a spectacular save that stopped Montreal forward Alex Mash from scoring on this great opportunity. As for the lady Tornados, their first scoring opportunity came almost at halftime. At the 35th minute, senior forward Bailey Varley took advantage of an accurately played through ball putting her in a one-on-one situation with the Cavalier’s goalkeeper Varley was able to make a move and get passed the goalie, but was fouled in the box fortunately giving the Tornados and penalty kick. Sophomore Jaime Bundy was not able to place the ball at the back of the net, leaving the game at a 0-0 tie. As the clock dwindled down to the final minutes of the first half, junior forward Carolina Anderson was able to take advantage of a scoring opportunity in the 42nd minute as she chipped Montreal goalkeeper and scored for Brevard, pulling one up for the Tornados on the scoreboard. “H was a hard fight,” junior captain Hannah Graham said. “We knew we had to find a way to win. With a great save by Brittany and a well-placed ball by Carolina, we found that way to win.” Taking the field after halftime, the Cavaliers did not give up; they found a new fight and determination which lead them to outshoot the Tornados 11-3. Despite the offensive push, Brevard’s defense lead by goalkeeper Brittany Webster was able to hold strong and preserve their team’s victory. “The game against Montreal was hands down a 90 minute battle until the last whistle blew,” Assistant Coach Caity Brown said. “Both teams left it all on the field and it was nice to come out on top in the end. Our girls have worked so hard this season and they are finally getting the results they deserve. Hopefully this positive momentum continues into our first conference match against Carson Newman and we come home with another win.” Brevard College hires new basketball coach Photo by Park Baker Mark Prosser joins the Brevard College Coaching Staff in the fall of 2011, coming to the Tornados from Wofford College, where he was involved in all aspects of coaching, including scouting, prep recruiting and film breakdown.
