School nurse loses job

Rumors were flying and tempers were
flaring yesterday as the word spread quickly,
across campus and beyond, that Director of
Medical Services Susan Martin had been
let go.
Students, alumni and staff have rallied to
Facebook groups to express dismay and even
outrage that Martin, a friendly and consoling
figure to anyone with a problem, medical
or otherwise, may be the latest victim of
financial problems at the College.
Aparticular Facebook group titled “Brevard
College needs Susan Martin” was created
at 5:53 p.m.—within two hours it had
accumulated more than 100 members.
Mixed with the outrage and dismay online
were questions, such as why, or what
happened, and what does this mean for
students in need of medical attention! One
question that has been answered, however, is
the most obvious: Martin has confirmed with
the Clarion that she has in fact been laid off.
As of press time, the College had not issued
an official statement regarding the change
in campus medical services. That did not
stop rumors from spreading quickly around
campus late Thursday afternoon, however,
including one as yet unconfirmed suggestion:
that students would need to pay for medical
services out of pocket at the Urgent Care
clinic near the College.
The Clarion contacted various members
of BC’s administration for the facts on how
this decision was made and what the impact
will be on the community. Because the story
broke so late, past business hours, the Clarion
had received no official word from members
of the administration to our requests for more
information. The Clarion will continue to
report on this story as more information is
brought to light.
Given the reactions so far, however, one
thing seems certain—^Martin has left her mark
on BC, and according to her, the feeling is
mutual. “I love all of you, and you know how
to find me,” she said.
