Album review: Astronautalis
By Park Baker
Editor in Chief
Florida native Andy Bothwell has been tirelessly
recording, touring and producing music under his stage
name “Astronautalis” for nearly 10 years. Often touted
as our generations’ most talented raconteur, his fusion of
hip-hop, rock and roll, and the indie genre is a testament to
the amalgam that contemporary music has become.
The libretto entitled “This Is Our Science” is Bothwells’
fourth album and like anything worth listening to, it
becomes more fluid with each listen. Each song is written
sequentially, so that each track transitions to the next
seamlessly, painting a bigger picture when the album is
listened to straight through. “This is our Science” spent
four days in the iTunes top ten most downloaded albums
list last week.
His voice breaks free from the confines of hip-hop
on “The River, The Woods” and the intricacies in the
production give the listener a glimpse into his repertoire.
With a quiver of styles and influences, his fervor blossoms
with each track.
Bothwell has been touring with and opening for the
Canadian indie act Tegan & Sara for the past year through
Europe and Australia, after co-producing their new album.
Tegan Quin appears on the track “Contrails,” and her voice
reverberates beautifully, giving the song its name.
Astronautalis is about to begin his North American tour,
and the closest venue to Brevard is in Charlotte on Nov 1 st
at the Milestone.
“Measure the [' || ii ’ i'
Globe” is my favorite
track on the album.

Part love ballad, ‘ -
part pithy insight
giving credence to
something larger than
us; Bothwell ends
with “I couldn’t tell
you dear, which one whispers in my ear, the
Devil or St. Andrew...But I know its time
to go. I’m sure you got a great theory, if
I’m hunting something or its haunting me,
know there ain’t no right way to measure the
globe... Oh no... .Oh no.”
