For twenty nine years more than one book
per day has been challenged by someone,
somewhere.
That is more than 11,000 challenged books
since 1982. This week, September 24 -
October 1 is the national celebration to read- or
Banned Books Week.
To challenge a book is an attempt to restrict
materials from a bookstore, school, or library.
A ban is to actually remove them.
The focal point of the 2011 Banned books
Week is a virtual YouTube read-out. People
are encouraged to create a video of themselves
reading a challenged or banned book and then
upload it to the Banned Books Week channel
on YouTube.
Hundreds of bookstores and libraries across
the country stand up this week, for their beliefs
about censorship by mounting displays of
banned or challenged books for everyone to
see and hosting events.
Kai Schwandes, manager of King’s Creek
Books proclaimed, “The idea of a freedom-
loving society banning anything is ridiculous;
it’s ludicrous and hypocritical.”
Kody Hughes, freshman, said, “You should
be able to read whatever the hell you want.
Banned Books Week is an awesome way
to express our freedom to read through our
freedom of speech.”
Whether someone believes in censorship,
thus banning books, or that it is never
acceptable. Banned Books Week is a seven
day period where people can get together and
stand up for what they believe in. You can
