Oct. 28, 2011 I The Clarion Sports Page 11 Tornados win final road contest of 2011 season over Vallyries ^/lantef ^jcevetfo tj^rter The lady Tornados traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina this past Wednesday to battle in their last road match of the season against the Converse College Valkyries. The Tornados were able to put three goals on the scoreboard in the second half, two of which were in the last five minutes of play, as they defeated the lady Valkyries 4-1 at Hayden Abney Fulp Field. Senior Rachael Laughlin and freshman Megan Jenkins started off the attack for the Tornados. Brevard recorded shots on goal in the first ten minutes as they outshot Converse 23 -14 on the evening, but Converse goalkeeper Katie Wasylko to keep the shutout intact turned both offerings away. Brevard took the lead in the first-half of the hard fought match when senior Bailey Varley was able to find the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Jamie Bundy in the 11th minute of the game. They took the 1-0 lead into half time. As the minutes passed, the lady Tornados continued to play with passion and determination. Sophomore Elena Crowe and senior Caitlin Flubbard both attempted to expand the lead with shots on goal, but Valkyrie goalkeeper Wasylko proved up to the task once again. Converse’s Lisa Ryan nearly tied the match but her offering deflected off the crossbar in the 21 st minute mark to keep the BC lead intact. In the second period, Brevard would be the first to strike again off a Chelsea Freeman goal in the 54th minute to extend their lead, 2-0. The Valkyries began to find their opportunities late in the second period, and were finally rewarded in the 82nd minute. With the game up for grabs, Brevard looked to Varley again to pull them through, which she did in the 85th minute when she scored her 2nd goal of the game. With a 3-1 lead in the 88th minute, Brevard’s Jamie Bundy pulled a left foot trigger from 16 yards out to find the upper-left 90 and push the game to the final score line, 4-1. Brevard returns home this Saturday, Oct. 29 as they finish the 2011 regular season against South Atlantic Conference opponent Catawba College. The Tornados will recognize their nine seniors: Jordan Box, Alyssa Caracena, Caitlin Flubbard, Bailey Varley, Chelsea Watson, Rachael Laughlin, Janet Basinger, Chelsea Freeman and Danielle Burch after the contest in a brief ceremony on the BC Soccer Field. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Indians is set for 2 p.m. Come support our lady Tornados!
