Page 12 THE LAST FRONTIER The Clarion \ Oct. 28, 2011 This week in history ^lA^efissa ^^uffeSarjer °StaffWkter October 28,1929 Black Monday happens, one of the worst days of the single most devastating stock market crash in United States history. This event led directly into the Great Depression, an economic disaster that dragged down the entire world. The cause is many times deliberated over, and economists still can only agree that it was a spectacular failure of Wall Street policy. Fortunately, a wonderful thing happened and the world was saved from financial misery: World War II. October 30,1945 Jackie Robinson signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers, officially breaking the color line in baseball Before Robinson, there were several “Colored Leagues” in operation, but there was no overlap. In writings of the time, the main argument that allowed Robinson to j oin was the acknowledgement that telling blacks that they couldn’t play baseball alongside white men after they had all fought a war together was blatantly unfair The Dodgers would continue to be one of the most popular teams in the league until they up and moved to Los Angeles, a transgression for which many people’s grandparents still have not forgiven them. October 31,1517 Martin Luther posts the 95 Theses. Luther’s famous note “The Ninety- Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,” is most recognized for being the spark that led Europe into the Protestant Reformation. Its main complaints were against clerical abuses, most particularly the sale of indulgences, which allowed members of the church to literally pay (money) to atone for the sins and the sins of their relatives. This practice is still used today; most notably my televangelists who promise the healing hand of God will come down on those who donate generously. Word Scramble Answer Key UOHUBddB 01. This particular play focuses on the attempted wooing of a pair of very different sisters by a cast of suitors, and the errors and difficulties resulting therein. The lights came up each of the nights with a full audience, and the laughs began almost immediately. Some of the humor within Shakespeare’s plays is frequently overlooked, but not in this performance. Shakespeare plays are always renowned for containing entertainment for persons of any walk, from slapstick all the way to wordplay, and this cast embraced both sides of the Bard’s Padua- set play, though a few humorous lines were skimmed over The stand-out performances were of the two students playing the “shrew” and her husband: Jordan Kahili as Katerina and Addison Dent as Petruchio. The two captured the relationship well set out in the play, properly depicting the evolution of their relationship. One accusation frequently made of this particular play is that it portrays distinctly misogynistic views and should not be performed unaltered for this reason. I would say that the cast of Brevard’s production handled this issue well, with character performances absurd enough to be laughed at equally.
