Rock gym expansion

The local Brevard Rock Gym is changing
locations! The new location will be open to
the public next Tuesday Nov. 1. The new gym
is literally right behind the current location
next to Brevard Cross Fit.
The owners decision to move was made,
among other reasons, to have more room.
“We’re going to have more routes, more
room, taller walls and new features.” said
Sophomore Hughes McGlone. McGlone is
not only a Brevard College student but he is
also an active member of the rock gym and a
part time teacher to the younger climbers.
The gym will still hold free climb night for
BC students and possibly begin to hold more
competitions. The rock gym is getting ready
to hold an ABS (American Bouldering Series)
competition this Saturday and the CCS
(Collegiate Climbing Series) competition in
the near future.
The location of the new gym and the bigger
space it will provide will hopefully bring in
more competition opportunities for not only
local climbers but for BC climbers as well.

Kaitlyn McConomy's The Colors, Shapes, and Sizes of “The Taming of the Shrew”

After three months of researching and
designing costumes for “The Taming of the
Shrew,” Theatre major Kaitlyn McConomy
presented her senior project this past
Wednesday at the Morrison Playhouse.
McConomy was the costume designer
for Brevard’s fall play “The Taming of the
Shrew” for her senior project. The project
entailed researching and studying Elizabethan
clothing, analyzing the play, and making all of
the costumes. McConomy also decided what
the actors makeup would look like and on top
of all of that, she created a design portfolio.
“Much time was spent on how color, pattern,
and silhouette effect character relationships,”
McConomy said.
Choosing the topic was an easy choice for
McConomy. “We had an adjunct here for a
while who’s focus was costume design, Katie
Fuller, who kind of became my mentor my
Sophmore year Ever since then I’ve been
obsessed with fashion, design, and costumes,”
she said. “Also I really wanted to challenge
myself and figured costuming and Elizabethan
period piece was a great
opportunity.”
In the end, all of her
hard work paid off “I
really enjoyed everything
about this project. It’s
something I am very
passionate about and
really enjoyed," said
McConomy. “It’s always
nice to see what you’ve
worked so hard on come
to life.”
McConomy also
offered some solid
advice for rising seniors.
“Choose something that
you are passionate about! Also, don’t be
afraid to take a risk and challenge yourself,”
McConomy said, “If you don’t try now to do
something you love, you may end up never
having that opportunity again.”
