Cassie Smatana Security on campus By Karam Boeshaar staff Writer Out of the 20 times the Fire Department was responded to fire alarms being set off in the dorms throughout the course of the Fall semester, 18 of them were related to excessive steam from hot showers in the bathrooms that triggered the smoke detectors. Since new boilers were installed over the summer and were set at a high temperature, it has created excessive steam from hot showers which would then set off the fire alarms, since it cannot differentiate between smoke and steam. As a result, the temperature of the hot water has been lowered since last week, and so far, there has not been a fire alarm going off due to steam. Stan Jacobson, head of security, hopes it will stay that way, and the problem persists, another solution will have to be sought after, such as trying to relocate the smoke detectors away from the bathrooms. In the meantime, Jacobson would like to thank the patience of the Brevard Volunteer Fire Department and the cooperation of the students being evacuated from their dorms during the fire drills. n Haunted house volunteers, Jordan Poole, Michelle Svendsen, Olivia Fawcett, Kaitlyn Wood, Melissa Sullebarger. Insane Asylum in Dunham By Olivia Fawcett staff Writer The Brevard College Psychology Club with a little help from the History “Past Times” Club, as well as a few extra volunteers, put on a spectacular haunt on Sunday, October 30th. The basement of Dunham had been transformed into an Insane Asylum. The haunt included a bathroom with a patient holding chains, another patient who would scream before being dragged back into her cell by yet another insane patient. There was also a lobotomy scene with a patient strapped down to a bed, a girl being eaten by a cannibal, and of course patients in strait jackets and padded rooms. With strobe lights flashing, black lights glowing, fake blood everywhere, and of course plenty of actors ready to scare the visitors of the asylum; the haunted house was a night full of scares and screams. As Kaitlyn Wood, the girl in the padded room stated she “made grown men scream like little girls at the insane asylum tonight. Mission accomplished.” And it was a mission accomplished.
