Nov. 4, 2011 I The Clarion Page 7 Fall sports wrap up their seasons By Joshua Smith staff Writer Brevard College Tornado fall sports are soon coming to a halt as the fall semester approaches the end. All the fall Tornado sports have been in full swing since late August and are soon ending within a few weeks. The fall sports at Brevard include Men and Woman’s Golf, Men and Woman’s soccer. Men and Woman’s cycling. Men and Woman’s cross country. Men’s football. Woman’s Volleyball and cheerleading. For all Brevard fall sports there were ups and downs. There were games where they completely dominated and other games which just didn’t go their way. Through it all the Tornados pressed on until the finish. Both Men’s and Woman’s soccer teams concluded their seasons with similar records. The woman’s team, coached by Shigeyoshi Shinohara, finished with a 3-14 record and then men’s team, coached by Juan Mascaro, finished with a 3-13-1 record. Men and Woman’s golf did considerably well also this year They both competed in four tournaments which were the Anderson Invitational, Pfeiffer Fall Intercollegiate, Tusculum Fall Golf Classic, and the LMU Invitation. The best placing for the men was at the Pfeiffer Fall Intercollegiate where they placed 3rd. The woman also placed 3rd at the Pfeiffer Fall Intercollegiate. The Brevard cross country teams have been doing exceptionally well this year also. So far they have competed in six races this year and in each one they have done really well. The best of the year for them came at the Bulldog Stampede located in Wingate. Here the men took 2nd place and the woman took 3rd place. The cross country team a major NCAA Regional race coming up this Saturday in Charlotte. This year’s cycling team competed in 4 races before competing in the National Championship. They have raced at East Tennessee State in Jackson City, Tennessee, at Georgia Tech, Mars Hill, and Lees-McRae. Then from Oct. 28-30 they competed in the National Championship in Angel Fire, New Mexico where they placed 6th place. The woman’s volleyball team is currently 6-22, and is going to be ending their season in Tennessee this weekend. They have a match Friday night against Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, and a match Saturday afternoon against Carson-Newman in Jefferson City. The Brevard Men’s football team is looking to improve from last year’s 4-7 record with two remaining games. Tomorrow’s game is home against the Catawba Indians and next Saturday’s game is against Newberry in Newberry, SC. The Tornados have been playing plenty of nail-bitters this season and look to defeat the 2-7 Indians. The bitter-sweet part about the ending of fall sports is that the seniors on the team are playing in their final intercollegiate games. Some may move on to become professional athletes and some will move on to be professionals in some other field. Senior volleyball player Ashlie “Smash” Morrison expresses her feeling of moving on as she says, “It’s a bittersweet feeling. I am going to truly miss the game of volleyball i have played this game for 1 Oyears and its one that I love dearly, so it’s hard to realize that my time is up. I will also miss my girls/teammates! they have made my collegiate career such a wonderful experience and I have built some great friendships.” Photo by Keith Marek Kate Weisenfluh takes second at nationals.
