Page 2 The Clarion \ Nov. 18, 2011 Life is what you make it By Carolina Anderson staff Writer When you think of “college life” what do you think of7 “Dynamic?” “Freedom?” “It’s whatever you make it”. Those were the responses I received from just a few Brevard College students, some athletes, some WLEE majors, some freshmen, and some resident advisors (RA’s). Even with the answers that I received form these students, I still found myself frustrated. Why? Because even though there are some students that understand Brevard College is not one of the bigger schools located in a big college town, there are still those few that apparently are hell bent on making the rest of us suffer right along with them, with their daily complaints that “the food sucks” .. “there’s nothing to do” .. “other schools do so much more”. And to them, I really only have one obvious solution, if the food sucks, don’t eat it. If you’re bored, stop talking about how bored you are and get involved with something because your “boredom” derives from your laziness. If all these other colleges host some event you’d like to see or have at Brevard, once again, do something. Talk to the Student Government members, talk to the Campus Activities Board members, there are literally at least forty people who’s job it is to listen to those types of complaints and change things so that the student life or the “college life” is satisfactory for everyone. And while CAB (Campus Activities Board) will most definitely never be a host to a “nude keg party”, they may bring back other events or bring in new events that may really peek everyone’s interest. For instance, who doesn’t love free movie nights? The majority of the people I talked to say that the chill nights, movie nights and the Mr. Brevard contest were the best events so far So what else would be entertaining for everyone? When I asked my fellow students what else they would like to bring to campus, the variety of answers left me with the notion that we’re not all Debbie Downers, “My favorite CAB events are the festivals: Spring Fest and Fall Fesf’, “I wish they’d have the Student Union/Center open for hang outs”, “The live bands they bring to campus are my favorite”, “Live bands. Jeopardy Tournaments, Scrabble Contests, Campus wide hide and seek and zombie tag”. The Brevard College motto is “Step In. Stand Out.” Not step in and complain instead of acting on your frustration. So for all of those who feel there is “nothing to do” there clearly are plenty of activities to do, and if none of the events I mentioned or any of the other events that CAB, Intramurals, or anyone else’s hosts seem like fun or a good time, make one up. College is what we make it, let’s make it memorable. Chewing Tobacco woes By Park Baker Editor in Chief I am appalled at the presence of chewing tobacco in the water fountains and in the urinals around campus. Even in the trash cans is just plain wrong. Why can’t you little boys flush it? Or simply abstain from it all together? Can you seriously not go more than a couple of hours without a nicotine buzz? Ever wonder why you must resort to leering at the girls on campus, wishing desperately that you could embrace one of them without the advent of alcohol? It’s because what looks like dirt between your teeth is actually foul, carcinogenic ground minty plant matter If it is the taste of toothpaste that you desire, perhaps you should try using actual toothpaste. Don’t you boys carry your Mountain Dew bottles for a reason? It is obnoxious enough to have to smell it in class, as you so sneakily spit the acrid backwash into the container Every time I see someone doing this, I watch with excitement, hoping it will dribble down your chin and all over your fresh BC sweat garments. No one is here to tell you what to do to your own body. That is your business, but it becomes a problem when those in your immediate environment cannot get water from a public fountain without being greeted face to face with a mixture of plaque, germs and what looks like dirt. It becomes a problem when what you cannot remove with any dexterity from your mouth spills on the bathroom floor or in the sink. The same people that are responsible for this cro-magnon behavior are probably the same ones responsible for dribbling the last bit of their urine on the floor as they hurriedly finish micturating As Kanye says, “You can pay for school, but you can’t buy class.” THwk BEFOEUOU ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES www.smokeybear.com
