Page 8 Arts & Life The Clarion \ Nov. 18, 2011 Star Gazing from the Parkway LOCAL CLUD LISTinG / FrirtavNnv IS Used by permission of The University of Texas l^cDonald Observatory Planets and stars team up to stage two pretty conjunctions this month, with the Moon passing by each duo. Mars and Regulus, which rise shortly after midnight, remain within a few degrees of each other all month, with Mars nearly doubling in brightness by month's end. Saturn and Spica, which are low in the southeast at first light, also snuggle close together throughout the month. In the meantime, Taurus climbs high across the sky, reaching its zenith around midnight late in the month. Orion and Gemini climb skyward earlier each evening, and by month's end are in good view by the middle of the evening. November 17, 2011 The last-quarter Moon, the star Regulus, and the planet Mars put on a good show late tonight. They are in view by 1 a.m. and stand high in the south at first light. Regulus is to the lower left of the Moon, with Mars to the lower left of Regulus. November 18, 2011 The planet Mars is in good view before dawn tomorrow. The Red Planet is to the upper left of the Moon at first light, with the fainter star Regulus a little to its right. November 19, 2011 Venus is climbing into better view in the evening sky. It’s the “evening star,” quite low in the southwest as the sky begins to darken. The fainter planet Mercury is below it, although you may need binoculars to see it. November 21, 2011 Look for the planet Saturn and the star, Spica near the crescent The moon is in the southeast at first light tomorrow. Spica, the brightest star of Virgo, is close to the left of the Moon, with fainter Saturn a little farther to the left of Spica. November 22, 2011 Cassiopeia, the queen, wheels high across the north during November evenings. The W- or M-shaped star pattern circles the North Star, Polaris, like the hand of a clock, though in a counter-clockwise direction. November 23, 2011 The Moon is at perigee today, its closest point to Earth for its current orbit. It will pass less than 224,000 miles away, or about 15,000 miles closer than its average distance.
