D.c.2,2.111 Campus News ^ Brevard campus security beat By Karam Boeshaar staff Writer Head of security, Stan Jacobsen, highly recommends cychsts lock their bikes more securely whenever they park them, especially near the academic buildings. This is in response to a $5000 racing bike recently stolen when it was parked near the administration building. People should make sure their Mailroom vandalism Recent break-ins at the Brevard College post office have led staff to shut the mail room down after 2 p.m. Several packages have been stolen, mostly containing cookies and baked goods from home, although one package stolen from a student was worth more than $200. Security Director Stan Jacobsen thought the thieves might be getting in with a copied master key. “I changed the lock and installed a deadbolt, and they got in again,” Jacobsen said. After the second break in, it was discovered that the thieves are scaling the lockboxes and shimmying through the small space above. A bar exists above the P.O. Boxes, but there is space small enough for a thin person to squeeze through. It has not been determined whether or not the culprit is a Brevard student. Brevard Police are involved, and tampering with mail is a federal offense. The campus mail room will remain closed after 2 p.m. until a secure way to keep people from climbing over the mailboxes has been implemented. Park Baker The area above the lock boxes is where people are climbing over. bikes are locked securely with a chain, and removing the front wheel lessens the chance of a bike being stolen. Lately, there have been complaints of lack of commuter parking spaces on campus, ever since the reserved commuter spaces were removed since the beginning of the Fall semester Jacobsen, who initially incorporated the commuter spaces but were later removed. Pancake By Joshua Smith staff Writer As finals week approaches, students are looking for a way to relax. Next week’s pancake breakfast sure will make you relax after you gorge yourself Brevard has an outstanding tradition every year during finals. This is a night for students to relax from their studies, kick back, listen to music and enjoy some amazing pancakes. This tradition has been going on for 30+ years, well before Brevard became a four-year institution in the 1990s. Since 2000 Dee Dasburg, the Coordinator for Counseling Services, has been heading the breakfast night. This is her 21st semester heading this event. “The best part for the student is not j ust having pancake s at 10 p. m., no longer has the authority to integrate them. But Jacobsen hopes the college will decide to reincorporate them sometime in the future, as parking on campus becomes an increasing problem, especially ever since the main parking lot of the cafeteria was closed back in March 2010. It was done in an attempt to create a green space, yet nothing has happened yet. breakfast but having faculty and staff cook and serve it to the students,” Dasburg said. This year’s pancake breakfast will take place on the first day of exams, Thursday, Dec. 8, from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in Myers Dining Hall. So far, Dasburg says, 13 coaches, administrators, staff and faculty members have signed up to help with this event, and the list is steadily growing. The list includes Judy Jones, administrative assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, who Dasburg says last year was a “big hit as she put whip cream on student pancakes.” Last year’s event included about half the student population, which is a great turnout. This year, organizers are expecting an even higher turnout, so don’t miss your chance to participate in this time-honored exam-week tradition.
