Page 8 THE BACK PAGE The Clarion \ Dec. 2, 2011 This week in liistory 10 Comanttmcnt^ of tijtnc pancalic^ By Joshua Moses Smith Staff Writer By Melissa Sullebarger staff Writer “There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all." These words were spoken on December 2 of 1964 by one of the students involved in leading the Free Speech Movement, Mario Savio. The movement itself was a student protest speaking out against a school abolishment of political activity on campus which took place at the University of California at Berkeley. However, the actions of these students ending up having a very significant effect on both their school and the country as a whole, helping to cement the nature of protest during the many civil liberties movements of the 1960s. Thousands of students were involved in this protest, blocking movement through the area, particularly in the case of one student, jack Weinberg, who was arrested and ended up sitting in the back of a police car for 32 hours, as the other students completely surrounded the car in a way that made any movement impossible. Somewhere around 800 students were arrested, and there were charges pressed against many of them. This scenario hits close to home for many of us today, as many aspects seem to reflect actions currently taking place in many major cities throughout the world, both on the part of protestors and the reactions of officials. Whichever side of this current issue one takes, however, it is always wise to leam from history, and avoid repeating the same mistakes. i. ®I)ou sfliall not tarnisfl) tlie name pancake ii. ®I)on sfliall not put toliippeJj cream on tlip pancake iii. ®nneces(s(arj' sugar is forbiJjJjen ii). ©nip partake at qnalifieJj pancake probiJjersf b. ®I)on sfliall not mistaken a pancake for a “flapiack” or “crepe” hi. ®I)on sfliaU make a toeektp practice of tlie consumption of pancakes bii. ®I)ou sliatt treat a pancake as tliine setbes biii. ®I)ou sliatt steal pancakes if tliine lias to ix. ®l)ou sliall not unJjercook pancakes or be punislieJj kp Jjeatl) X. pancakes or Jjie!!! lAST MINUTE CONCEBT!
