Bathroom procedures posted
By Park Baker

How we treat others is often indicative of
how feel about ourselves. The same can be said
for our environment. By our ‘environment’ in
this context, I mean the college campus. To
narrow it down further, I am talking about the
men’s bathrooms.
I often wonder if I am a hypochondriac
when I use paper towels to turn the faucet
on and again to open the door After some
reflection, and casually observing my peers
behavior in the men’s room, I have decided
that I am not.
Someone who is as disgusted as I am about
student hygiene has taken to putting up signs
in some of the bathrooms around campus.
They read elementary things such as:
“FLUSH. ”
“Wash your hands. ”
“Did you wash your hands? Then turn
around and do it. ”
There is even step-by-step instruction in the
men’s room upstairs in MG, indicating that
when you urinate, to raise the seat, and when
you are done, to lower it back down. Then, to
“FLUSH.” Why do adult men need to be told failures.
to wash their hands after fondling
themselves? No one cares if you think
you are clean. No one else does.
Why are these things necessary
to point out on a college campus?
What does this say about the kinds of
people Brevard College is attracting?
Is it even something to blame on the
current wave of apathetic sweat pant
wearing students? Is there a hygiene
epidemic occurring across the nation
that no one is noticing?
I am sure the custodial staff notices.
I sure notice when my shoe soles stick
to half dried urine on the bathroom
floor, because Ricky and Jimmy can’t
squeeze the last bit out in the toilet
bowl. I would expect these things in
an elementary school.
I hope every girl on campus
reads this, and thinks twice about
touching a man’s hand. Chances are,
they haven’t washed them. I hope
they check your shoes for drips, and
secretly check you off their list of
potentials.
Man up boys, make someone
proud. At the very least, make your
parents feel like they are not complete

Gingerbread house mania
first place with a very classic style looking buildings with all assortments of candies £

Thursday Dec. 8 was BC’s first ever
gingerbread house competition! Some builders
started as early at 8:00am and everyone worked
vigorously throughout the day to finish their
graham cracker, candy covered, dream houses.
There was an 8 and 1/2 hour time limit to work
within before the competitors had to turn them
in for the judging at dinner There were 39
houses built and entered into the competition
out of which about 80 people participated in
the building process and 91 people voted for
their favorite masterpiece. The results were
announced at the semi-annual pancake break
allotting prizes to the top 3 contestants. In
third place there was a tie between Kendra
Okeefe who made a wonderfully architected
“Grinch Vacation House in China” and Janet
Basinger/Michelle Prata who miraculously
built an extravagant ship. In second place
Jordan Box rocked the competition with her
original and highly decorated house. And in
place with a very classic style looking
gingerbread house Rhiana Barrero. She won
the $50 prize money and the bragging rights of
becoming the 1 st annual Gingerbread House
Building Champion.
All the houses were wonderful and
contestants put ample amounts of time into the
constructing and decorating of their original
pieces. This contest was a great way to escape
from the stress of studying for exams, and it
was a fun activity to do with friends before we
all head home for break (even if students spent
more than a few hours working on our houses
when we perhaps should have been studying).
There were many different styles which ranged
from log cabins to a southwestern adobe house,
classic gingerbread style houses to the Brevard
College Bell Tower and a ship to a historic
castle. Thea Dunn and Josie Rodriguez,
both students who are from Germany, built a
great impression of King Ludwig IPs castle
“Neuschwanstein”. The atmosphere was great
listening to Christmas music and shoving
toothpicks into graham crackers while gluing
them down with frosting. Decorating the
buildings with all assortments of candies and
chocolates was an extremely fun way to spend
the first day of finals.
This CAB event was a great success and
will hopefully be a new tradition. Thank you
to the Alumni Board who made the builders
and voters Exam Survival Goodie Bags! Good
Times!
