Aprils, 2012 I The Clarion Sports Page 11 Lady Tornados lose 3-0 to Young Harris By Chantel Azevedo Sports Editor Brevard battled both the Mountain Lions and the weather on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Young Harris, 3-0. Brittany Fowler posted two hits and Brittany Tucker and Maddie Fletcher each a double in the contest. Game One: Young Harris 3, Brevard 0 In the bottom of the first. Young Harris struck against Clemens as Emily Wilson launched a 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence with one out in the frame to give the Mountain Lions an early lead. In the top of the third, the lady Tornados threatened Young Harris as Brittany Jones and Fowler reached on back-to-back one-out singles. Unfortunately for Brevard, YHC was able to escape the inning with a double play to end the inning and keep the score intact. Young Harris College added their second run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kayla Jones led off the inning with a home run over the left centerfield fence. The Mountain Lions gave the Brevard College Tornados a scare as they put runners on first and second in the inning with two outs. Fortunately, Clemens retired the side to keep the 2-0 score intact midway through the game. With runners in scoring position in both the fifth and the sixth inning, Fletcher reached a one-out double up the middle, while Tucker led off the sixth inning with a double to straightaway centerfield. However, the Tornados were unable to come back and pace past the Mountain Lion’s lead in the contest. Young Harris added the final run in the bottom of the fifth as Wilson brought in Sydnee Weaver with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Game Two: Brevard 3, Young Harris 0 (Suspended in 2nd inning) The second game was opened with three runs in the top of the first for the lady Tornados, but a lightning delay and the imminent darkness ended the afternoon between the Tornados and the Mountain Lions, with the second game and statistics not counting toward either team’s schedule. Brevard remains on the road, but returns to South Atlantic Conference play as the Tornados travel to Hickory, N.C. today, to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University. First pitch in the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Bears at the LRU Softball Field is set for 1 p.m. Let’s go ladies! Brevard baseball In full swing By Joshua Smith staff Writer Brevard Baseball has had an action-packed week playing games and playing them well. They took their tough schedule and showed what it what it means to be a Tornado. On Friday March 30, the Tornados were up against the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial, and the Tornadoes took a demanding 6-2 victory over LMU. The next day they were faced against LMU for a double header where they battled twice more, and again they were victorious, winning 12-8 in the first game and dominating the high scoring next game 21-16. In the Tornados’ most recent game they were up against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on the road in Boiling Springs. This was a close game, but the Tornados pulled through late in the game to take a 8-6 victory and left the Bulldogs pouting. After the past four victories, this puts the Tornados just below .500 on the season at 19- 20. They are currently fifth in the conference behind Tusculum(32-5), Catawba(30-8), Wingate(26-16), and barley behind Carson- Newman(20-20). Your Tornados will be back in action this afternoon at 3 against Wingate. Tomorrow they play a double-header against Wingate. The first game starts at noon and then at 3P.M. GO OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR TORNADOES!!!
