Even with difficult economic times, Joyce complicated details of filling in the bare space. Even with difficult economic times, Joyce is optimistic that the school will grow. The president said, “I have faith.” Members of the BC community cannot help but notice the gaping hole that used to be a parking lot between Moore Science building and Myers Dining Hall. On March 30, the construction crew that had been available to work on the BC president’s home began to rip out the pavement to move forward with the plan for a common area that former president Drew Van Horn had proposed before he left. As Van Horn’s successor, Joyce wants to carry on with the plan to establish a common area in front of the cafeteria. “We got a grant to pay for the removal of what we have; now we need to focus on the financing of what we put back in there,” Joyce said. “The gift paid for taking out what was there and to develop the plan. It’s a little ‘ready, fire, aim.’ One of the reasons we did it now is because that machinery was also being used to work on the president’s home, and Deborah Hall cut a deal with the team.” Joyce explained that because the construction crew was already on campus with their equipment. Hall was able to negotiate the deal on taking out the asphalt for a significantly lower cost than what it would have been under normal circumstances. “It was a good deal and now we are committed, we have to finish this off,” Joyce said. “I’ve got to go out and raise more money.” Representatives from the college were already meeting with landscaping specialists and architects the morning that the constmction project began to determine the necessary but complicated details of filling in the bare spaee. Drainage has to be taken into aeeount, as well as what was underneath the parking lot, and the quantity and kind of dirt that would be needed. “We called someone this morning to find out how much it would cost to bring turf in—grass would just wash away every time it rains,” Joyce said. “When I say ‘ready, fire, aim,’ it is a little bit of that. We had to take advantage of this machinery while it was here. The good news is, it is our hope and dream and plan that when you show back up in the Fall, it will be a grassy knoll, and no matter what happens, it will be better than an empty parking lot.” Originally the area was meant to be a fancy student plaza, but to do that would be a very expensive endeavor. The grass and trees that will be placed there will not be inexpensive, but will be much more affordable than the original ambition that Van Horn had planned out. “The grass plaza makes more sense,” Joyce said. “The architect we’ve been meeting with will also observe traffic patterns and help us rethink the master plan. He doesn’t have the designs yet, I just met him today. The Board will weigh in during the summer, so hopefully when you come back in the Fall, we will have a brand new plan. For now, we struck while the iron was hot.” While Joyce is still a new member of the Brevard community, he has been quick to integrate himself His dedication and his frequent negotiations with architects and food service providers prove that he is working for the betterment of our school. •HWHWW: [ CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD ] Campus Activities Board is raising money for Relay for Life.
