His short story collection, The Waterhouse, is being published by Press 53 and you can get your own copy from their website for a paltry twenty bucks. I’ll wait. Got it? Good. You can expect it sometime in early October, but in the mean time, I sat down with the professor to get an idea of what it takes to get where he’s gotten. The bulk of the book is taken from his 2000 dissertation of the same name, with a new story here and there. That’s just how long it takes to get published, almost twelve years. While giving the interview I was facing a fish bowl full of letters on his desk. The label: “not just rejections.” All it really takes to get set in the writing business is the right “In,” the perfect introduction or connection to get everything else lined up. Professor Tiner found that in Press 53 founder Kevin Morgan Watson. "He used to, you know, ‘jam ’with the guitar player of my all-time favorite band when he was growing up, on his front porch. It was my favorite band. The Rainmakers. Made it big in Kansas city, also huge in Norway. ’’ "They were Rolling Stone’s #1 new band the year they came out... so anyway, it was this instant connection with this funky-cool band NOBODY knows about, and he was just a good guy. So it was another six months, I got a message that he’d read the stories, asked ‘what is this? ’ etcetera. So 1 sent him the whole thing. “ ‘This is a great thing, ’ he said, ‘Because even if we don’t publish your book it’s good press for you as an author’ I thought, that’s it, he’s gonna pass , you know?, so we were working on the gallies and there was something wrong in my bio. I told him and he sent me back the final proof copy edit and he had made the correct change, but then at the bottom, there was this added line that said ‘Jubal Tiner’s The Waterhouse: short story collection forthcoming from Press 53 in 2012. ’ “But he wouldn’t tell me, and I thought ‘oh my god, this is a mistake ’so 1 wrote back saying it all looked great and that 1 looked forward to working with you on the book, and uh, he wrote back right away and said ‘So am I. ’ ’’ Brevard College English professor Jubal Tiner's short story collection The Waterhouse will be available for sale this month from Press 53.
