Sylvia tQ open next Thursday at Morrison Playhouse
By Caleb Welborn
staff Writer
Tickets are now on sale for A.R. Gurney’s
Sylvia, presented by the BC Theatre
Department.
Director Brandon Smith calls the play
“an extremely silly production with a lot of
heart.’’
The play stars Junior Addison Dent as
Greg, Junior Jordan Kahili as Kate, and
Freshman Hannah Leonard as Sylvia. Junior
Raquan Edwards plays three characters: Tom,
Phyllis, and Leslie.
The show will run from next Thursday,
November 15, through Sunday, November
18, at the Morrison Playhouse in the Porter
Center.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show at 7:30
p.m. for the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
showings, and doors open at 2:30 p.m. with
the show at 3 p.m. for the Sunday showing.
The show is about 90 minutes long.
The cast members have been hard at
work on the production, which according to
Edwards, “is coming along smoothly.”
“It’s the most rigorous play ever,” said
Dent. “We’re learning new rehearsal styles
that are exhausting but rewarding.”
Edwards agreed. “Rehearsals have never
been more exhausting.”
These rehearsal styles include the tape
technique, which involves the cast recording
scenes on a tape recorder during a seated
reading, and then silently acting out the scenes
as the tape plays back.
They have also been method acting at what
Dent called “a beginner degree.” With this
technique, the actors personalize what their
character is doing with experiences of their
own in order to connect with the part and
convey true emotion.
“It’s something totally different for us, but
it’s a good thing,” said Kahili.
“We’re making it sound like a grueling
Crossfit workout, but it’s fun,” said Dent.
“We’re always having a good time. We’re
exhausted, but we’re pumped up as hell to
step in that room.”
The play will benefit Charlie’s Angels
Animal Rescue, a non-profit organization
dedicated to rescuing abandoned, neglected,
and homeless animals from the area shelters
and providing them with safe passage to a
new home.
During the
intermission of each
performance there
will be a slideshow
of animals in need of
homes. In addition,
the Friday show will
feature a 10 to 15
minute informational
“talk back” session
with representatives
from the shelter.
Tickets are available
for purchase online
(link to etix.com from
BC Theatre Studies
webpage), and at
Rockin’ Robin Records.
Tickets may also be
purchased one hourprior
to each performance at
the Porter Center Box
Office if not sold out.
Smith recommends
getting tickets as soon
as possible because
some of the showings
are nearly sold out
already.
General admission
is $5.00.
Junior Jordan Kahili (Kate), freshman Hannah Leonard (Sylvia), and junior Addison Dent (Greg), rehearse
