The Brevard Music Center partnered with Brevard College to sponsor this event, which brings in different musicians each month. In the audience, there’s a great blend of community members and students waiting to hear the great musicians. For the month of February, the selected musician was Celil Rafik Kaya, who brought his Istanbul influenced music to Brevard. Celil Rafik Kaya is a young classical guitarist with talent beyond his years. From Istanbul, bom in 1991, he has been playing guitar since he was 6. His first concert was in the Cemal Resit Rey Concert hall in Istanbul, in 1997. He has won many awards. Internationally, he won the 2009 Sofia Bulgaria Young Virtuosos Competition, the Philadelphia Guitar Society International Guitar Competition, and the winner of the 2008 Istanbul Pera Guitar Festival and Competition. In the US, he won the Louisville Guitar Competition and the Columbus State University Guitar Competition. Humbly taking the stage, Kaya sat with his beautiful guitar and his nimble fingers began their game. The delicacy and grace that he played with was beautiful and entrancing enough, but the music he produced was glorious. The seven wonderful pieces he played demonstrated his talent and skill, but one song in particular revealed his personality. Kaya had recently met Jorge Morel, an Argentinean composer, who wrote a piece for him. It was titled “Celil’s Dance” and demonstrated a great range of talent. His other pieces were a blend of composers, ranging from J.S. Bach, Manuel Ponce, Joaquin Rodrigo, and Leo Brouwer, to a piece he arranged himself The First Mondays Concert Series is sponsored by Brevard College and the Brevard Music Center. The concerts are the first Monday of each month at 12:30, in the Scott Concert Hall. Admission is free.
