Audrey Ashburner competing
Working on transition;
The Climbing Club s road to becoming a team
By Jessica Wiegandt
staff Writer
The climbing team is striving to find a way
to become more than just a club. Sophomore
Audrey Ashburner, president of the team, is
pushing to make the transition from a club to
a team officially recognized by the college,
allowing for recruitment and a larger funding
pool.
In the fall of 2013 the climbing team was
introduced to the club roster at BC, allowing
anyone with interest for climbing to join. This
allowed the students to have a community
in which they could learn how to climb in a
supportive setting. Soon after, the club began
training to compete in regional competitions,
with members placing each time.
Ashburner joined after learning about the
team during orientation. “I competed as a fresh
man and had a good time, and then this year
Cam Austen [faculty advisor] said I needed to
find funding for the extra Tuesday night climbs
for the team.” Ashburner said, “I ended up do
ing the work of the president so it made sense
I become the president, we put it to a vote and
I took over.”
According to Ashburner, her main role as
president is finding funding. Last semester,
each club was given the budget of approximate
ly $300 per year from SGA to fund activities.
Currently, Ashburner has found private
donors and sponsors to fund two climb nights
per week and pay for all competition fees for
team members. “Just to compete, it costs five
grand, and that’s bare minimum.” Ashburner
said, “If we were fully funded, to pay for comps
[competitions], jerseys, climb nights and other
costs it would be 30 grand a year.”
The expenses and dedication required for
climbing caused the transition from being
known as climbing club to climbing team this
year. At the 2015 fall club day, the climbing
club was listed as a club/team where those who
signed up could decide whether or not they
wanted to compete.
“Once I became president, I decided ‘nuh-uh,
there’s no choosing’ because if you’re a part
of the team, you’re a part of the team and you
compete.” Ashburner said, “All you have to do
is pay the $35 USA Climbing registration fee
and you’re a part of our team. Competing is
just traveling to a different school and climbing
in their gym.”
On club day, Ashburner said there were
about 30 students who signed up to join and

BC welcomes
students for
spring semester
By Kaelyn Martin
staff Writer
Last week, BC began its spring semester of
2016 by making sure students feel welcome
and enthusiastic to start the new semester.
On Jan. 6 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Cam
pus Life greeted us with our normal check-in
requirements and a new Check-In Processing
Fee. “Check-In is mandatory for all students,”
Director of Residence Life Michael Cohen
said. “This is just an additional incentive for
something all students already have to attend.”
Cohen notes that attendance at Check-In
was much greater this year. “Campus Life
appreciates the significant efforts of students
for attending this year’s check-in.” Housing
has also helped ease back into the second
semester by adding new washer and dryers in
the residence halls.
The Campus Board of Activates or CAB
provided fun music and even some snacks for
students attending check-in. Students were also
able to enter a raffle to win some awesome
BC gear. However, members of CAB not only
welcomed students but also planned events for
the upcoming week.
Some of the events held this past week
include comedian and hypnotist Chris Jones;
Bowling and Karaoke Night at Rockin’ Bowl,
and Spirit Day for the Men’s and Women’s Bas
ketball team. CAB worked hard to host many
of the events that took place, and be sure to go
“CAB now has 11 executive board mem
bers. Hannah Leonard being president of the
2016 school year,” Said Capri Savage, head of
student engagement here at BC. These events
are only the beginning of a great semester with
CAB. Future events hosted by CAB included
Rap Battle on tonight, Jan. 13; Bingo on Jan.
14 and a Lip-synch Battle on Jan. 28.
The faculty also welcomed students back to
campus. Library staff William Heinz, better
known as Chilly, shared key advice, “Think
about the things that delayed them in getting
their stuff done and anticipate them to happen
again,” he said, “because in general through
out your college career you can expect certain
