BC and community come together to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Q\/ LJ TT T-v 1 . ■ .,-X By Hayleigh Mann Contributor BC joined the rest of Transylvania County in its 26 Annual Unity in the Community Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The celebration consisted of a community brunch on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Bethel “A” Baptist Church, sign mak ing on Sunday at BC for “The Walk to Change” march on Monday through downtown Brevard that would end at BC’s Porter center where it would be concluded with a program that night. Many BC students started the celebratory weekend off bright and early at Bethel “A” Baptist Church Saturday to show their support for the twentieth anniversary of the Rise & Shine Freedom School and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The morning was busy serving hot food and beverages and familiarizing the students with residents from the community. Some students like Kris Odom, a second semester freshmen and environmental studies major, wanted to make a good first impression in hopes he can intern at the after-school pro gram in the future. “ It was cool to see people of all races and backgrounds come together to celebrate M.L.K. Day,” Odom said. “This brunch showed to me just how much the com munity of Brevard is united.” After the meal was served and the chatting began to cease, Ed Buckley, a member of The Human Relations Council for Brevard and Transylvania County (HRC), gave a hearty talk and coordinated activities involving everyone in the room. The council also provided voter registration information and restated how important it is for residents to voice their opinions, just what Dr.King fought for, by using the power of vot ing in the coming elections. The annual “Walk to Change,” which is the name of the MLK March, was much colder See 'MLK,' page 3 Daniel Dittman joins BC post office By Alex Laifer staff Writer Despite the fact that Daniel Dittman may be new in his role as the mail clerk for BC’s Campus Post Office, he is anything but inex perienced. Dittman was bom and raised in Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in business. He moved to Naples, Florida and worked in the banking industry. He went on to become the Vice President and Branch Manager at 1 st National Bank. 20 years ago, he moved to Brevard and decided to switch careers. He worked at the United States Postal Services processing plant in Asheville where he sorted and processed mail for 16 years. He has always been happy living in Brevard specifi cally with its outdoor theme. He retired from USPS in 2014 but didn’t stay in it for long. He wanted to fill in time and jumped on the opportunity to become the new part-time mail clerk. However, his favorite part of his job is; “Being in a college atmosphere and working with young students.” Dittman is a family man. Last August, he had his 40th wedding anniversary with his wife Kar en. He has three children - Danielle, Michelle, David, and he now has three grandchildren. The next time you go to the campus post of fice to get a package in the afternoon, you will likely be getting it from Dittman.
