Music/Activist Duo Perform
in Durham
Seattle-based musicians Charlie Mur
phy and Jamie Sieber wil] perform in
concert at 8:00 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 16,
in Durham at Club Cameo (1103 West
Chapel Hill Street, beside Sallam Cul
tural Center). A donation of $4 will .
be requested at the door.
Calling theiir presentation "Living
in a Time of Thunder," the duo is stop
ping in Durham as part of their na
tional tour to promote their recent
record. Catch the Fire. The Advocate,
a national gay news magazine, has des
cribed Murphy as a "latter-day trouba
dour" with a "rocking rhythm reminiscent
of some of Peter Seeger's songs."
Murphy last appeared in the Triangle
area several years ago at the Southeast
ern Lesbian and Gay Conference in Chapel
Hill. At that time he was living and
performing in the Roanoke, Virginia,
area. Since moving to Seattle be has
helped organize Good Fairy Productions,
a group of gay m.en "committed to the
developing of a healing, life-affirming
culture among men in harmony with women,
children, spiritism, and the earth."
The group produced another album. Walls
to Roses on which Murphy also performed.
In an interview with John Zeh of Gay
Community News, Murphy explained that
"the focus of my music is connecting the
oppression of gay people and my own to
the oppression of women, people of color,
old and young people and doing that by
being a very out and sissy man. It's
real important to present the image of
a gay person on stage and in life sing
ing and talking about black prisoners,
chicanos. United Farm Workers, nuclear
power, all different issues."
Through music, he said, "You can hold
out a vision of what we could move
toward. We need to sing songs which
express our experiences now, the prob
lems we all face, and lend solidarity
to struggles against them, bun also try
and hold out a vision of where we want
to move toward. Unless we do that, we
won't get there."
Ms. Sieber began playing cello when
she was seven, learning both orchestral
and solo works. She has used her impro-
visational skills to explore connections
between music, politics, and spirit.
She helped organize and performed with
an all-women's folk-blues a capella
trio.
She has played and sung with Murphy
for the past three years on two West
Coast tours and several Seattle-area
shows. Together they have appeared at
lesbian/gdy 'pride rallies, and she help
ed with the recording of Catch the Fire.
Ms. Sieber is also a registered nurse
and is involved with women’s health
care.
Organizers of Good Fairy Productions
express their belief "in the power of
music, poetry, drama, and other cultural
expressions to encourage, challenge,
inspire, and unify."
Dear men, lay your armor down
Dear men, let your softness flow
Come on and let go of all the
deadly power games you play
Let go, let life find a way love
We have every right to be proud
of a love that dares to shine
Shining in this land where
True love is a crime
Gay love is a fire that burns
For love equality
The fire is still raging
It is the light of your brother’s
eyes
